About the Author
Gerald N. Callahan is a professor of immunology and public understanding of science at Colorado State University with joint appointments in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology and the Department of English. Robin M. Yates is associate professor in the Departments of Comparative Biology and Experimental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary.

Solid Overview of Immunology

I thoroughly enjoyed this textbook. I know that seems weird, but it was a very easy read that contained a solid overview of immunology. It's effectiveness will depend heavily on the level of knowledge needed in your course, but if it is a basic overview you are looking for -- this is the textbook for you. It is easy to follow and I would highly recommend it for a vet student who is taking a basic immunology course, a vet looking to brush up on their immunology, or a lay person looking for a good overview of the subject. It is worth noting that while this is a veterinary immunology textbook, it will carry over to humans as well...if you're into that kind of thing.

Highly recommended for philosophers !

This lucid and important book was considered by Schopenhauer as the introduction to his magnum opus "The World as Will and as Representation". It can be conceived as Schopenhauer's alternative version to Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" as an attempt to map all A-PRIORI knowledge. Schopenhauer, an obvious sequel to Kant, differentiates himself from Kant in this book in two basic assumptions: 1. There is no distinction between REPRESENTATION and OBJECT. We perceive objects directly, not through a subjective "buffer". 2. PERCEPTION is not logically independent of UNDERSTANDING, on the contrary. We perceive objects (necessarily) already understood, i.e. determined and related to other objects. Schopenhauer interprets the last premiss as the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which he claims to be the root of all A-PRIORI knowledge.

Fundamental Literature

I am happy to encourage any reader to Schpenhauer's doctoral thesis, just as much as he himself did in the introduction of the World as Will and Representation. The book is absolutely worth the time spent, and it is indeed a coherent prime step (though this is a revised edition of the 1814 original) to Schopenhauer's philosophical system. The translation by E.F.Payne is product of a life's effort. It is almost impecable and will stand to the demands of the accurate reader, though it may be advisable to compare and review the original in order to look for the literary sound of the ideas exposed. Schopenhauer is one of those rare cases where highly expressive prose correlates smoothly with mighty philosophical meaning. He may also be an excellent way to perfect our understanding of Kant.

Minor Problem

This amazing treatise on human knowledge has one little fault. The editors at Open Court left out eleven words in the Tranlator's Introduction. This omission should gratify present-day philosophers in that it turns Schopenhauer's words into modern-sounding nonsense. I will surround the omitted words with parentheses. On page xx, Schopenhauer is quoted: " ...so that I cannot hope ever to find a more correct and accurate expression of that core of my philosophy (than what is there recorded. Whoever wishes to know my philosophy) thoroughly and investigate it seriously must take that chapter into consideration." You see, the occurrence of the word "philosophy" twice in close proximity utterly confused them. I notified Open Court but did not receive an acknowledgement. Other than this, I have to judge this book as one of the few life-changing writings that occur a few times every century. For laughs, read Heidegger's "Principle of Reason" and compare the two.

Comprehensive introduction

This is a fantastic introduction to fluency disorders and treatment. It was easy to follow and very thorough regarding introductory definitions and therapy design. His chapters on fluency therapy are definitely worth the read; he provides his own ideas for therapy with sources cited and offers comparisons between various methods for context/further reference.

For each compound the set provides a chemical structure, physical, chemical and spectroscopic data, purification method, source organism, biological activities if known and references to the literature. Each volume is indexed by compound name and precise molecular weight. This greatly facilitates searching for compounds in a mixture of unknowns with preliminary spectroscopic and mass data in hand.

Book is ok. The book title & tag line are misleading

The book title & cover are pretty misleading. This book main focus of the book seems to be them promoting their virtual Assistant business. They go over how they built their business, month by month, but the business is only 1 year old. They refer to times as 'the early days', but the business really still is in its early days.

They discuss how to they use tools like Slack, Trello, and Chargify to 'Optimize, Automate, and Outsource' some parts of their business (and say that they coach clients to do the same thing), but don't go into a lot of specific detail on how other companies can do the same thing (they offer consulting services to tell you those details).

I guess at the current price of $2.99, it was worth that price (as it's interesting to read the process of their 1st year in business), but the book (especially the first 3rd or so of it) largely reads as a sales pamphlet for their business. If you're looking to learn 'How to optimize, automate, & outsource everything in your business' (as the book cover states), you'll likely want to look elsewhere. One of the authors, Ari Meisel, has another book that sounds like it's actually more about that than this book is.

Meh, I don't why but I was expecting a bit more than a 10,000 ft overview. It read like a long form sales letter. Some takeaways but there are better books on doing more with less.

The product came in a good condition and in time as stated in the order confirmation. All information about the book and description of the book condition were very clear and true. For example, only a minor scratch in the cover was stated, which I could not have even seen if not looking so carefully at it. The defect is almost nothing. For me, it is a good seller.

The story of The Trial's publication is almost as fascinating as the novel itself. Kafka intended his parable of alienation in a mysterious bureaucracy to be burned, along with the rest of his diaries and manuscripts, after his death in 1924. Yet his friend Max Brod pressed forward to prepare The Trial and the rest of his papers for publication. When the Nazis came to power, publication of Jewish writers such as Kafka was forbidden; Kafka's writings, many of which have distinctively Jewish themes, did not find a broad audience until after World War II. (Hannah Arendt once observed that although "during his lifetime he could not make a decent living, [Kafka] will now keep generations of intellectuals both gainfully employed and well-fed.") Among the current crop of Kafka heirs is Breon Mitchell, the translator of this edition of The Trial. Rather than tidying up Kafka's unconventional grammar and punctuation (as previous translators have done), Mitchell captures the loose, uneasy, even uncomfortable constructions of Kafka's original story. His translation technique is the only way to convey the comedy and confusion of this narrative, in which Josef K., "without having done anything truly wrong," is arrested, tried, convicted and executed--on a charge that is never disclosed to him. --Michael Joseph Gross

Kafka's final work was left unfinished at the time of his 1924 death, and the original 1925 and subsequent editions were edited according to the standards of the day. This edition endeavors to restore the text as closely as possible to the original manuscript. According to the publisher, "This translation makes slight changes in the chapter divisions and sequence of chapter fragments." The meaning of Kafkaesque..

Kafkaesque: Impenetrably oppresive or nightmarish, as in the fiction of Franz Kafka.
Indeed, "The Trial" is the epitome of this adjective used to describe the haunting novels of Franz Kafka.
Breon Mitchell's translation is fantastic as it expands and clarifies the first version by the Muirs. A lengthy translators preface is included, written by Mitchell, explaining the reasoning for this new translation based on the German definitive edition. Various examples of the text (in German) are also used in the explanations of the hows and whys.
On to the story itself. Josef K. awakens one more to find that he's been arrested. He doesn't know why and is never told. His daily life is allowed to go on over the course of the year the novel takes place, while trying to understand what is happening. Throughout this process Josef begins to sink further into paranoia and guilt, with the fate of his life in the balance....
This is a deep and dense novel, with various interpretations. It's scary to realize that this could actually happen (perhaps not on this scale) and that's one of things Kafka excels at. Taking the everyday mundane and catapulting it into the realm of the absurd and nightmarish..
The leftover fragments of "The Trial" are also included after the story, adding further insight into this tragic story. It's also worth it to pick up the Muir's translation, to see the differences, and to have the original english version to keep.

A Crazy Train

No novel will ever approach THE TRIAL in giving one a special, and by all means necessary, appreciation for the criminal justice system and rights in the free world.

Imagine being charged with a crime tomorrow, but no one will tell you what that crime is, when you committed it, who accused you, who or what was harmed, or when your trial will take place. Then, when you talk to court workers and even your own lawyer, it's a foregone conclusion that you will be found guilty and your best hope is to drag out the process as long as you can just to STAY ALIVE as this crazy train hurtles toward your inevitable end.

A historic, nightmarish novel that plants in its reader bad-dream seeds that may not germinate for years, but they will. Oh yes, they will.

I don't deny that Kafka has a very out-of-the-box way of writing, but to be honest it didn't do it for me. While I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for a light/fun read, if you're looking for something that will test your grip on reality, I'd take a gander. Definitely gets you talking.
