Its chapters, written by specialists in the field, present individual methodologies and focuses while retaining an introductory character. The Handbook will be valuable to all readers wanting to orientate themselves in the immense ocean of Neo-Latin literature and culture. About the Author

Stefan Tilg is Professor of Latin at the University of Freiburg. Before that, he was the first director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies in Innsbruck. His main publications are from the fields of Latin Jesuit drama and ancient fiction.

Sarah Knight is Professor of Renaissance Literature at the University of Leicester. Her main research and teaching interests are in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English and Latin literature. She has edited and translated several early modern Latin works, including Leon Battista Alberti's Momus, the accounts of Elizabeth I's visits to the University of Oxford, and John Milton's Prolusions.

Morimoto in his own words...without that goofy tv translator!

[[VIDEOID:mo1DLW7OU9RBDJ5]]Masaharu Morimoto is one of the few chefs I've seen on tv that I've been really impressed with. His execution is flawless, everything he makes looks delicious even if it involves a food I don't like, and he just plain seems like a cool guy. His book, Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking offers a ton of great recipes as well as some background information on Morimoto, and his insights on certain aspects of Japanese cuisine and presentation. There have been some minor criticisms that this book isn't exactly traditional Japanese cuisine, and the title of the book should make it clear that he wasn't going for that, but reading the introduction, you'll understand why Morimoto doesn't want to be held back by tradition. He wants to make new things, try new takes on old dishes, and enjoys combining one style with another. Take one look at his tuna pizza, found in the Sashimi and Sushi section, and you'll see how seemingly crazy ideas work.

The book is divided into the following main chapters:

Sashimi and Sushi
Rice, Noodles, Breads, and Soups
Fish and Shellfish
Duck, Chicken, Pork, Beef, and Lamb
Vegetables, Tofu, and Eggs
Recipes to Contemplate
Desserts
Stocks, Oils, Spices, and Sauces

I'm no chef, but recipes are written so simply that it's hard to mess up anything in here. Ingredients that might not be found at your local store can be found at the specialty markets in the back of the book (though there is a typo saying that one Uwajimaya shop is in Beaverton, Washington...when in fact Beaverton is in Oregon). The majority of the recipes have short introductions by Morimoto where he describes the dish or talks about how he came up with it, and the presentation of the book is beautiful. If anything, my only complaint is that there could be a few more pictures for some dishes, but 90% of them are covered perfectly. I especially liked the chapter breaks where Morimoto talks about Japanese knives, seaweed, plating and more. He comes off as a teacher giving history lessons on the subjects, and genuinely wanting to help out those who read the book, and never sounds full of himself. The introduction alone is worth checking out this book. Morimoto really did work his way to the top, and I have full respect for the guy.

If you haven't picked up a copy yet, do so before it goes out of print again. I'm a picky eater but this book has encouraged me to try new things. Here's hoping for a second book that's just as good or even better, if possible, than this one.

Chef Morimoto shows of his artistic and culinary skills and is a good teacher.

I've had the pleasure of dining in some of Chef Morimoto's restaurants and always had great meals so I wanted to add this book on his perspective on Japanease/Asian cooking. Overall I found the book very well written with interesting recipes and good photography. At times I felt like he was in my kitchen teaching me as I read. He was always fun to watch on the original Iron Chef shows and his master style of cooking and pulling in different elements of Asian cuisine .

About my only complaint is that whoever designed the book used a background image behind some of the pages of words that makes it very hard to read what is printed. I found I had to read those pages in a brighter lit room and really focus on what was written and not the background image.

Excellent book, Not for the faint of heart.

Purchased this book for two reasons: 1. I am a big admirer of the artistry that Chef Morimoto brings to his food. 2. I wanted a few choice recipes to add to a dinner party I had planned. There is little room for home cooks that are not advanced in this book. The ingredient lists can be difficult to fulfill unless you are privileged enough to reside near various gourmet and asian markets, so creativity and skill come in handy to replace things or make adjustments when exotic ingredients are not available. The recipes for the most part are very accurate and don't produce the typical "no one will ever attempt this" results that some high end cook books give. The photography is superb and congruent with the art of the cuisine. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a heart for adventure in the kitchen and a hefty budget for the more exotic offerings listed. Chef Morimoto is as unique a talent as can be had in the typically traditional world of Japanese cuisine. Excellent book.

Wattenberg investigates the impact that political parties' declining relevance has had on presidential politics. As the parties' ability to polarize opinion weakened and voters were set politically adrift, the candidates themselves had to fill the power vacuum. Interestingly, as the candidates have become more prominent, their popularity has spiraled downward. Wattenberg's national survey data debunks the notion of Reagan as the "teflon president;' demonstrating that many negative judgments stuck to Reagan's public image throughout the 1980s, particularly the criticisms of his conservative policies.

The author's intricate analysis shows that many people were torn between candidates whose policies they preferred and those who they thought would produce the best results, and these contradictory attitudes were primarily resolved in favor of Reagan and Bush.

This book is not only the successor volume to the author's widely used book on American parties, it is also a controversial and thought-provoking commentary on American parties, politics, and representative government.

Wattenberg expands upon the themes of his first book, The Decline of American Political Parties, in which he asserted that more Americans than ever before were taking a 'neutral' stance toward the Democratic and Republican parties. In this new work he describes the effects of political neutrality: the rise of candidate-centered politics...Wattenberg discovers that since 1968 Democratic and Republican presidential candidates have suffered declines in their overall approval ratings. This is especially true for Ronald Reagan. Candidate, voters, and bad decisions

Wattenberg makes an argument that the weak party system has caused many voters to search for new ways to identify who they will vote for when participating in presidential elections. The information these voters would find rests in the performance of the sitting president. If the sitting president is doing a good job, then the voters will elect them, but if not the and the president is not seen as doing a good job then the voters will vote them out of a job. Further evidence of this is found in the Obama results of 2008. A great deal of voters elected Obama without knowing much about him. What they did know was the Bush did a poor job, and they voted against the republican in that race. That was all it took for them to vote for Obama, just the idea they were voting against four more years if the Bush administration. This is how voters decide issues today, but the book is silent on what the consequences of this happen to be.

What matters most: policy or performance?

Wattenberg starts by reviewing theories of how people vote. Do people vote because of where they live? Do people vote because their families have always voted for this or that party? Do people vote for one party because they are dissatisfied with economic conditions? With changing social values? Or do people choose someone because the candidate seems to be the right person for the job?

The book then presents presidential election returns and polling data ranging between 1952 and 1988 and the trend is unmistakable. People are voting less and less along party lines, less and less according to policy trends (which had stabilized) and more according to performance. The data indicates that voters in the 1980 election didn't so much elect Ronald Reagan as they rejected Jimmy Carter. Likewise in 1988, they didn't so much elect Bush senior as they re-elected Reagan to a third term.

Interestingly, being elected doesn't seem to confer a policy mandate of any sort on a candidate, or at least not as strong a mandate as first impressions would lead us to think. What matters most is not which policy platform the candidate will adopt, what matters most is who the candidates are and how people expect them to perform.

Conservatives should not dismiss the liberal author's conclusions since they seem to have been corroborated by election results since 1992. Wattenberg uncovered trends that all politicians need to consider.

Boone Moves West

It is always fun to read about your hometown area. The forts of central Kentucky (Ft. Harrod (the first permanent fort), Ft. McClelland (the first fort), Ft. Boonesborough, Ft.Logan, and Bryan Station) have always had a lure for me. Here in the bluegrass the settlers fought the many Indian tribes that used Kentucky for their hunting ground. Bakeless takes you from Daniel Boone's life in the east, his life in Kentucky, his life with the Indians, to his need to move on westward. It is an interesting book. The read deal on Boone

I have an ancestor that once met Colonel Boone, so I wanted to learn mire about this complex and interesting man. This book is recommended by the top Boone researchers as the one that separates fact from fiction.

It's a great read, and just as fresh as when written in 1939. Truth is certainly stranger than fiction, especially in the life of "D. Boon", a man who led a series of adventures in Kentucky in his younger life, as well as Missouri in his later.

It's hard for me to imagine the vision this man had. When others saw danger, he saw opportunity. He took a group of settlers deep into the territory of "Kentucke" and settled, building farms and a fort. He defended it against hostiles. The story of the rescue of three teenage girls after a three-day chase? True. His escapes after capture, including adoption, aren't legend... They're fact.

Several terms in the Virginia legislature, where he knew both Washington and Jefferson. Yep. And the loss of all of his lands by crooks, thieves and taxes. Also true.

Most of his life was lived in Missouri, which when he first moved there was Spanish- then French- and finally American. He knew Merriweather Lewis, and probably knew Clark as well.

Get this book. It's a real jewel.
