About the Author
Dr. Jones was trained as a clinical psychologist and studied the socialization of children while serving on the faculties of both UCLA and the University of Rochester. Dr. Jones spent the past three decades working in classrooms to discover how exceptional teachers produce happy and productive classrooms no matter what students they are given. The #1 Indispensible Teaching Book

Simply put: This book covers all the bases. If you are a new teacher stressing out, this book is a must. If you are a veteran teacher searching for that spark you had a few years ago, this book is the answer. For whatever reason, colleges do a really poor job preparing this country's soon-to-be teachers. All I remember learning about in my EDU classes were countless theories and how to write five-page lesson plans.
Once I started teaching I quickly realized that my college professors didn't prepare me for the realities of teaching. (All of you veterans out there know exactly what I am talking about.) Anyhow, if you are looking to be more successful in the classroom, at any point in your career, pay the $20 and if this book takes away just one headache during your next month of teaching then it was worth it.

There are better books, I hope

I had to read this book for a classroom management class for my teaching degree and had a hard time getting through it. There is a lot of practical advice that might work, but it's buried in too many stories. Plus, Jones' tone is very arrogant and condescending. The only thing I really got out of it was the explanation of how PAT works, and then he started picking on a hypothetical kid named Larry. There are better books, I hope.

Classroom Magic

This is the best book on classroom management I have read. It is filled with humorous, real classroom examples that every teacher will recognize. There are plenty of ideas that can be used immediately. They are not labor intensive and they can be adapted for a variety of subjects and age groups. You can modify difficult behavior and keep your sense of humor. I teach middle school math. I moved a few desks, changed my lesson order a little, changed how I answered questions and my class is more productive. This common sense approach to classroom discipline is just the kind of book a busy teacher needs. When class runs smoothly, teaching is more fun for both the teacher and the students; this book will make that easier to achieve.
