About the Author
Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a life peer in the House of Lords.

Paul Bahn is co-author of Thames & Hudson's hugely influential and bestselling textbook Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice, and has also published a variety of popular books, including Easter Island: Earth Island (with John Flenley), Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age (with Adrian Lister), and Images of the Ice Age, widely regarded as the standard introduction to cave art.

About the Author
Barbara A. Brinson is an associate professor of Music Education at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where she directs the University Chorus, Women's Choir, and teaches choral conducting, choral methods, and foundations courses. Dr. Brinson served for 14 years on the music faculty of Southern Methodist University in Dallas and taught choral and general music in the Georgia public schools for 10 years at the elementary through high-school levels. She has directed choirs at all levels in both schools and churches. Brinson has served as director of the Intermediate Choir of the Chautauqua Children's Chorale; held the position of Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for Youth and Student Activities for New York American Choral Directors Association (NYACDA); and served on the editorial staff of the Journal of Research in Music Teacher Education. She has written articles for publications such as the Choral Journal, Music Educators Journal, and General Music Today. A frequent clinician at conventions, conferences, and schools, she also is very active as a guest conductor and as an adjudicator at choral festivals. Her professional affiliations include National Association for Music Education, ACDA, Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Kappa Lambda and NYSSMA. Dr. Brinson received her Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Tennessee, an M.Ed. in Music Education from Columbus State University, and a B.M. in Music Education from Wesleyan College.

This textbook offers complete and pertinent information for any student or teacher looking to develop a successful school choral program. I am not only impressed with Prof. Brinson's organizational skills, but also with her priorities as a teacher, director, and musician.

Expensive but worth every penny

This book is filled with quality hints and tips on how to organize a choral program at school! For the beginning teacher, it is an essential guide to help them understand what is needed to be a successful choral teacher and run a successful program at school, or as an extracurricular activity. Adversely, I find the book focuses on after-school choirs too much, but if this is what you need information on, you have a great book. The book has some very interesting suggestions on discipline within the choral group. There are also excellent musical suggestions and an excellent section on how to present choral pieces to a variety of group levels from beginner to advanced.

This is a must....

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

Great warehousing and material handling book

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

Good focus on functionally important structures

I teach an interdisciplinary course in psychology and neuroscience, and my psych students have found this book helpful for getting up to speed on neuroanatomy. I've also started using some of the pages as overheads during my lectures, since the diagrams are uncluttered and easy to draw on.

I'm writing a review because I thought I should mention that I found this book *much* more useful than its better-known competitor. The other book has more fine-grained anatomical detail, of the sort that would be most useful to someone studying to be a neurosurgeon - but the result is that it's very hard for a casual student to tell what's worth studying or remembering. This book does a much better job of focusing on the important structures, the ones that you're likely to see mentioned in popular science books and articles. The second half (Functional Neuroanatomy, with chapters devoted to the systems subserving different functions) is especially useful.

For anyone interested in self-study, or who just wants a quick reference source for neural structures that they see mentioned in other texts, I'd strongly recommend this book.

Not too heavy, not too light

--I am a medical professional who has not had a formal neuroanatomy course for some time. I've "returned" to neuroanatomy because brain science is so interesting, and because I now need to know it more and more for professional reasons.
--This book is grrreat for its intended purpose -- providing an accurate and reasonably entertaining BASIC introduction (or re-introduction) to functional neuroanatomy (and a good foundation is both rare and valuable). Without neuroanatomy, you are soon in the realm of "sophistry and delusion" while reading about extremely exciting recent brain research. This book seems to be a reasonably adequate BASIC text and is a good "piggyback" for further work. It isn't intended to bog you down, and will probably provide most of the neuroanatomy you need to know to read a book by Edelman, D'Amasio, Ledoux, etc. more productively and enjoyably.
--If you've never had a neuroanatomy course, breaking out the Crayola colored pencils is a good way to learn. If you have had a neuroanatomy class in the distant past, you can clear the cobwebs pretty quickly with this text. It's much less daunting than related texts, and you can always get to those later.

an excellent study resource

I'm a psychology major, and although I enjoy and do well with all other aspects of psychology, I had despaired of ever learning all of the brain structure and functions stuff. I finally bought this book as part of one last attempt to learn about the brain before I had to take the psych GRE subject test, and I found it to be amazingly helpful. For one thing, you get to color! That made it immediately much more appealing than my other study aids, which meant that I actually used it. In fact, I sometimes spent much more time on it than I meant to, because it is just such an interesting and fun book. It breaks the information down into small packages that are easy to learn, and moves through the material in a logical sequence. Each lesson consists of a few paragraphs describing about 3-5 structures, a column with a definition/brief description of each structure, and then a picture showing all 3-5 structures so that you can color each a different color, and see how they fit together. There are reviews and quizzes at the end of every chapter so that you can check that you've learned the material. Despite my previous cluelessness about brain structures, I found that I consistently got all the quiz questions right after working through the lessons. I would definitely recommend this book to any psych students who feel like they need to brush up on the brain, or to anyone else who is interested in learning about the brain. It's clear, easy to read, and fun!

James Holland is a Barrister, Professor of Employment Law, and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He is also co-author of Employment Law 2013, LPC Guide (OUP, 2013).

Julian Webb is Professor of Legal Education at the University of Warwick and Senior Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. Mandatory Power Tools for the Researcher

As a chemical engineering researcher, the Merck Index has been with me my entire career. Anyone out there who is remotely involved with biopharmaceuticals, galvanized plating, trigonal planar Lithium hydride battery formulations, or just plain ole kitchen cabinet cleaners. The Merck Index is your sole go to reference source for arriving to the heart of the chemistry rapidly. Researchers typically let their imaginations wander in the dark cave of molecular research frontiers and the Merck Index is their safe flashlight of known reactivities and quantities.

Great Reference - BEWARE MISSING PAGES

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn't find the Q's. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware....count your pages when you get this book.

Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.

This is a great book, and its stories of childhood life in a small Central Valley town still resonates strongly today.

This book, along with "The Human Comedy", comprises the essential William Saroyan experience. I would rate this book slightly below "The Human Comedy" in terms of the nature of the stories and the development they undergo -- but in Saroyan-land, even underdevelopment is superior to most other authors. This book is a series of seemingly disconnected short stories involving a small cast of characters, so you can read a chapter, put it down, and not have that feeling of incompleteness that George Lucas always left you with at the end of each Star Wars movie. Just one of the stories was worth the cost of the book -- the teflon cousin who breezes through life in the classroom with the blame for all of his sins somehow falling onto those nearby. No, he doesn't get his comeuppance, but the accusers (a classroom teacher and a principal) somehow get theirs, and in an completely unexpected and humorous way.

I am a high school student, and we read an excerpt from this book in our literature class. I immediately was intrigued by Saroyan's method of writing and the fact that his novels are autobiographical. This is a story of Aram Garoghlanian, a boy living in Fresno with his large family of Armenian immigrants. Throughout the book, such ideas are touched upon as maturity, honesty, and acceptance. My Name is Aram is a portrait not only of Aram Garoghlanian and William Saroyan himself, but Americans in general. Americans struggle with basic values and ideas everyday, and accepting our eccentric family members is something we learn to do. Saroyan describes small details in hi writing that bring the story to life and open up a new world. Readers will soon realize when they open this novel that each of us holds Aram inside us, whether it means we struggle with the idea of stealing a horse or keeping the families reputation. I strongly recommend this book to anyone.

Excellent book

The book is composed of different events that happened in the author's life. It is the life of an Armenian immigrant family in the beautiful San Juaquin Valley. Although, the story is about events that are happening in a particular Armenian family, in reality it is the life all immigrants in America. The stories some how effects all Americans. I am positive that some where in our lifetime we were criticized for a certain cultural trait. It is the story of the ultimate underdog who is determined to succeed. At the same time it is a very fun and easy book to read. I could not put the book down.
Saroyan has to be the best writer to come out of the West. He should have been recognized more for his genius work.

Method book I teach from

I teach from this method book. The teacher who said this isn't innovative or revolutionary or whatever is right: how much innovation can there be to a book about music?

What this book does is comprehensively introduce students to music, the guitar, different techniques, scales, chords, melodies, and covers more material than most technique systems do in any three books, saving my students money because they only have to buy this one book.

The teacher teaches. The book is a tool. This is a good one, and I usually keep a few on the shelf so my students have one to take home from their first lesson.

This book does rock

It's not correct to say I finished this one. Every time I open it there's something new to look at. This book is just gorgeous and has a ton of retro and vintage rock photos. My favorite is the use of vintage posters, album covers and rock tickets. In addition to the look, Thompson's picks are on the money but he struggles to put some genres into context. One example is an odd placement of a Bela Lugosi biography used at the beginning of a chapter on movie theme songs. Still, this is a book you'll love to own and want to share.

A beautifully engaging book

I'm proud to attach my name to an endorsement of this book. First off -- as witnessed through his many years as a Goldmine Magazine contributor -- Dave Thompson is an extremely witty and knowledgeable rock journalist and his writing style fits the objective of this book. Thompson is an expert on song selection and categorizes them here in a fun and engaging way. Visually stunning, this is the kind of book that will be hard to read only once and then abandon on a bookshelf somewhere. It's like a reference guide and coffee table book all in one; a book that you will enjoy returning to again and again. That's when you know a book is a good investment!

Love reference books, but this is more than that: it's fun to read, makes you laugh, and makes you often think abut songs you might have forgotten. Love the way it is organized into witty categories, too -- makes it a page-turner. Lovely design.
