Great book, maybe not such a great title !

I am an analog / mixed signal / signal processing / RF engineer with 30+ years of design experience. A friend of mine lent me the book. I could not put it down! This book was not purchased with with the expectation of designing RF ICs, hence my minor dig on the title. The book is really a broad band reference covering a wide range of topics including some great history. Professor Lee has created a reference that is only outdone by the likes of Frederick Terman! His humor is also keenly appreciated. The rest of the ivory-tower stuffed-shirts could benefit from a lecture or two by Lee on this topic :-)

Revising a Classic for The Better

I don't know if Larry Townsend ever had an inkling of just how influential his 1972 original "The Leatherman's Handbook" would become. I am certain he probably had no idea that - within a decade - the mantra of Gay Liberation would become fogged over by the onset of the plague of AIDS and the total indifference of the Reagan Administration. Leathermen, with their work hard play harder sexual ethic, were hit especially hard.

So ten years later, Larry took the results of surveys he'd taken with thousands of men, edited the language a bit (the original was written with a lot of seventies lingo) and made the important additions to reflect the changing health concerns. While still a revelatory book, it is also a more sober one. Back in the seventies, it was still a very risky proposition to attempt a gay publication of any sort. In the AIDS prejudiced panic of the 80's, it was still a considerable risk.

Larry Townsend's "The Leatherman's Handbook II," like its 1972 original, still spells out the codes of conduct that the underground Leather Scene and S&M men lived by and the numerous accounts of steamy real life kink encounters remained, though now with addendums about safety and health issues.

Even now, with a much wider variety of books available on how to and relationship studies, not to mention my own writings, it is hard to remember a time when Larry's book was such a shocking event. Voluntary servitude and fetishistic behaviors are given a great deal of coverage here, and the amazing thing is just how much most of Larry's original foundations remain relevant. Even more to the point is just how much the format of both editions of "The Leatherman's Handbook" became the blueprint for so much of our community's guidebooks; A little journalistic information followed up with some hot episodes.

Still, "The Leatherman's Handbook" one and two remain viable sources of both etiquette and education in addition to its historical value. Larry's work here is quite possibly one of the most important pair of books about the side of Gay Life that many would like to ignore, but it's with us and vibrant and exciting for those who have taken this intimate discovery. Like mine; a man who stumbled across a $5.95 edition of "The Leatherman's Handbook II" in a Delaware bookstore in 1989 and still has the dog-eared paperback on his bookshelf all these years later. It changed my life like gravity.

Even better than the original!

An excellent "how to" manual for the sexually dominant man. Gay or straight, it makes no difference, the attitude and techniques described in this book cut to the essence of what makes sex worthwhile: power and control. Clearly written, with lengthy sexual anecdotes, it is as sexually charged a book as was ever written.

"The Adventures of Soberman" is a great read!

This book should prove to be an inspiration for anyone who is either (or both as the author is) an alcoholic or gay person or in any type of recovery program. The author not only managed to come to terms with both his alcoholism and sexuality, but has also been able to turn his life around and be of help to others with similar issues. While acknowledging that his family background, in terms of his alcoholism, may have contributed to his own alcoholism, he does not harbor resentment towards them. Rather, as the child of an alcoholic, his book embraces his family because he realizes that people are not perfect and everyone has to deal with the problems of their parents, including his own children. He has come to terms with his life and, refreshingly, takes responsibility for his own actions. For me, the best aspect of this book is how he has learn to accept his own foibles and the foibles of those around him with both wit and wisdom.

Funny, lighthearted, warm read about a sometimes tragic life

This book is great! It is well worth your time if you're interested in recovery / sobriety, spirituality, issues of sexuality, or just interested in a light-hearted, comical autobiography of an Irish Catholic, born & raised in Hell's Kitchen, sent off ("volunteered") to Vietnam.

It's really got some humorous anecdotes in it that I just couldn't stop myself from turning the page, wondering when I'd be laughing next. Often, it wasn't several pages before I was cracking up - again and again.

Plus, the honesty - of his alcoholism, his battle w/ being gay, in the closet, out of the closet, in his spiritual life & trying to balance that against his Catholic up-bringing was just very revealing, honest, sincere and intriguing.

This book is well worth your time, a quick read and more than enjoyable.

The Adventures of Soberman! is a tall glass of laugh-out-loud misadventures about the author's battle with alcoholism and everything else. The author cleverly recounts his life experiences growing up Irish-Catholic in Hell's Kitchen, going to war in Vietnam, being married, realizing he is gay and discovering Alcoholics Anonymous-all while peppering his memories with hilarious and often touching anecdotes. Soberman! just might leave you with a thought hangover.

Great overview of different management tools

I like this book because it just does what it sets out to do, provide a brief description of lots of useful tools for managers. No hype and no overblown claims. The chapters are divided into different management activities and then the most common tools used in those activities are listed with a brief description, business application and other useful info.

Another very useful book but from a different direction is Thinking Visually: Business Applications of 14 Core Diagrams

Oh, Beast, what a guy!

I loved the relationship between Beauty and Beast! Both characters, as well as the minor players, were interesting and "real". I'm not usually a fairy tale kind of reader, but I really enjoyed BEAST CHARMING.

What do you do when your father schemes every step of the way to get HIS happily ever after? Beauty's father is a liar and a cheat. He has tried her whole life to use his daughters to gain riches in the world. When the novel opens, we find Beauty working for a temp agency. Will her next assignment be the one that will free them both from his grasp?

Beast Charming is a great twist on the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. This book stays true to the overall aspects but adds enough twists and turns to make it memorable. Wardell's writing and whit are unmatched in any retelling I've encountered so far. Her characters are REAL and exaggerated at the same time.

You will fall in love with Waverly, Beast, Beauty, Grace, Manny, and Steve. The banter. The scenery. And if you've already read Fairy Godmother's Inc. you'll see nods to that story as well. I cannot wait to see what the author comes up with next. This story is about finding your happily ever after regardless of what someone looks like or is perceived in being.

Loved reading this book. Lots of LOL moments. I give it 4 stars!

Oh my goodness. This author just continues to blow me away. Jenniffer Wardell has this amazing, witty sense of humor that interweaves into her storytelling. Her writing just flows effortlessly for me. Beast Charming was thrilling, refreshing, full of wit, charm, & an amazing bit of humor all mingled together. It brought about new life to an old, classic fairytale!

The characters were stunningly crafted! I'm actually having an internal debate about whether or not I loved this version of Beauty & the Beast more so than the original cartoon... Yes... it was THAT good.

Reading Jenniffer's guest post above (THANK YOU FOR THAT JW!), you'll immediately get a sense of what I mean when I say that the characters are perfect. Beauty is strong, independent, and oh so smart-mouthed. Hehe. I loved her! It's so nice to see a female lead who isn't afraid to take charge and go after what she wants. She's lived a horrible life thanks to her father pushing her on every prince & single noble man within a million mile radius. Her & her sister... I don't envy them for being the laugh of the ball at times. But they kept their heads high & they finally managed to get away from him to live their own lives.

Beast! I really, really loved his character. I liked the strength and the internal debate that he had going on within himself. He was a "beast" of a business man until he literally became, well... a beast. Then he shut himself out of the business world, not wanting people to see him looking more like his nickname. Waverly! Ah! I think he's truly one of my favorite characters in the entire novel. I loved every time he graced the pages. He had this calm sense of all-knowing about him that just hypnotized me.

The plot was great! I wasn't expecting some of the twists and turns that Jenniffer took while working through their story!

Overall, perfect 2nd novel by Miss Wardell. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!!!!

The Best Volume Yet.

I can't really say anything about this Volume without giving away spoilers regarding the events that take place. All I can tell readers of the manga to prepare for some incredible revelations regarding the characters, brilliantly executed plot-twists, and great insight into the World of Blood Lad. Essentially, this volume serves as a major turning point for the series.

This is volume 5, BUT it is volume 5 for the kindle. The downloaded version of Blood Lad is much smaller than the manga, which is why this says volume 5. If compared to the manga, it is what the third volume is.

Utterly Hopelessly Dreadful

The first half of the this volume is a major high-point in the story. Many of secrets of the past are brought to light and the anticipated confrontation that was insinuated in the previous volume unravels in a very unexpected way. The overall tone during this particular part of the story is one of futility and powerlessness. The second half of this volume feels like it completely breaks down the tone and tension in a way that I personally thought was perfect and kinda am not surprised by at this point (it's something that you should expect from this manga). The subtitle I would give to this volume would be: Our Lowest Point

Excellent Source of Solved Calculus Problems

W. Michael Kelly has put together here a wonderful book of 1000 calculus problems including solutions. I think that including solutions is important for the student, because even if you manage to find the answer to a problem, by studying the solution, you may learn a different approach to solving the problem. Plus, having the solutions is important if you are learning this outside of a classroom, and don't have an instructor to consult with. Kelly has done a great job of providing easy to follow solutions to the problems. He even has call-outs in the margins to provide additional information.

The book is light on theory, so I recommend the book: The Calculus Lifesaver by Adrian Banner for the theory part The Calculus Lifesaver: All the Tools You Need to Excel at Calculus (Princeton Lifesaver Study Guides). This book can also be used as an adjunct to a school text to provide additional problems for practice. If you decide to use Banner's book for theory, I have put together a table to cross-reference the chapters in the books. Just read the theory part in the Lifesaver book, and then follow up with more problems in the Humongous book. I present the table below. (Sorry, it seems impossible to get a table to display properly in Amazon.)

This book covers the major topics of calculus I & II. I highly recommend it.

Thorough step-by-step examples are best around

I am teaching AP Calculus AB for the first time, and still struggling to find the ideal text for my students. The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems comes closest. I really love this book, and use it as a reference all the time for my class. It is fantastic for the detailed pre-Calculus coverage, and for the complete, very thorough examples of each Calculus topic. The author starts with fairly simple problems, and gradually builds in complexity in manageable, logical increments. Plus, it's written in an entertaining manner, and is incredibly inexpensive. Alas, it is not perfect. Sheesh, what more do I want, you ask?

What would make it absolutely perfect would be if: 1) It really was a textbook, that is, if it added now-do-it-yourself exercises for students to practice each concept and 2) It clearly delineated AP Calculus AB vs. BC topics for the teacher who wants to focus on students passing the AP Calculus AB exam. For example, the solids of revolution chapter mixes examples requiring integration by parts with ones that don't require this technique. Solids of revolution by the disc method is an AB topic; integration by parts is BC and therefore a nicety, not a necessity, for my students.

Still, the best book I've found for the clarity of its examples.

Good book but there are better

This is a decent book. It will definitely help a student who likes to see problems worked out. I thought it was going to have problems for students to practice and then show the answers worked out. That format would have been more helpful. It starts with Pre-calc and it should state that somewhere since students who need pre-calc help, might find it useful to buy BEFORE calculus. I don't LOVE it because I feel that 5 steps to a 5 for AP Calc BC is a much better book, even if you are only taking Honors Calc, Regular Calc, or Calc AB. It gives better examples, more examples, and practice problems worked out. So even though this book says Humonguous Book of problems, it is a misnomer. Even though the AP Calc BC book suggests only someone in AP Calc BC could benefit from it, I would suggest that book over this one. FYI, I am a former Calculus professor and now I tutor students in all levels of mathematics, including Calc. Still, if the other book is not available, this is not a bad book and will help!
