About the Author
Dr. Jones was trained as a clinical psychologist and studied the socialization of children while serving on the faculties of both UCLA and the University of Rochester. Dr. Jones spent the past three decades working in classrooms to discover how exceptional teachers produce happy and productive classrooms no matter what students they are given. The #1 Indispensible Teaching Book

Simply put: This book covers all the bases. If you are a new teacher stressing out, this book is a must. If you are a veteran teacher searching for that spark you had a few years ago, this book is the answer. For whatever reason, colleges do a really poor job preparing this country's soon-to-be teachers. All I remember learning about in my EDU classes were countless theories and how to write five-page lesson plans.

Once I started teaching I quickly realized that my college professors didn't prepare me for the realities of teaching. (All of you veterans out there know exactly what I am talking about.) Anyhow, if you are looking to be more successful in the classroom, at any point in your career, pay the $20 and if this book takes away just one headache during your next month of teaching then it was worth it.

There are better books, I hope

I had to read this book for a classroom management class for my teaching degree and had a hard time getting through it. There is a lot of practical advice that might work, but it's buried in too many stories. Plus, Jones' tone is very arrogant and condescending. The only thing I really got out of it was the explanation of how PAT works, and then he started picking on a hypothetical kid named Larry. There are better books, I hope.

Classroom Magic

This is the best book on classroom management I have read. It is filled with humorous, real classroom examples that every teacher will recognize. There are plenty of ideas that can be used immediately. They are not labor intensive and they can be adapted for a variety of subjects and age groups. You can modify difficult behavior and keep your sense of humor. I teach middle school math. I moved a few desks, changed my lesson order a little, changed how I answered questions and my class is more productive. This common sense approach to classroom discipline is just the kind of book a busy teacher needs. When class runs smoothly, teaching is more fun for both the teacher and the students; this book will make that easier to achieve.

Donald G. Reinertsen is head of Reinertsen & Associates, a firm that specializes in new product development. He also teaches at the California Institute of Technology and has attracted a worldwide following among managers, designers, and engineers. An invaluable guide

I bought this and about five other books on product development. Without question, this was the best.
Reinertsen has an effective writing style that is engaging and informative. His examples are relevant and illustrative; even when not immediately on point with my business, they helped me to understand a concept.
The book builds on some fairly simple - but enormously powerful - tools including basic financial modeling and queuing theory. Reinertsen explains why the tools are relevant and how to employ them across a spectrum of businesses. He then uses the tools to substantiate some remarkable product development concepts that he presents later in the book.
The book is - thankfully - devoid of pithy phrases and buzz words. It teaches methods and ways of thinking. It doesn't profess answers, but it has driven an enormous amount of our product planning and product development efforts.
I haven't found a better book on the subject.

The first book I recommend on new product development.

Over years of working to improve the process of new product development in organizations with which I have been associated, I have read many books on new product development and reducing cycle time of new product development. I regularly am also asked about these topics in college and executive courses I teach. There is no single book that completely covers these topics. However, if you only have time to read one book, I think Reinertsen's book is the one to start with. It is a real eye opener. Many profound(!) and extraordinarily productive concepts and methods are presented in a reasonably sized, easy to understand volume. You won't go wrong in buying it.

Real thinking and action tools you can use

If you're looking for a book to arm you with the latest buzzwords and easy answers, this is not for you. If you're looking for a useful framework for thinking about product design and tools for applying principles, this is an excellent buy. This book is clearly written, well-organized, and full of useful information.
Unlike many management books, it's not 20 pages of information stretched out to 200 pages in order to make a book. Also, unlike most product development books, this book is of great value not just to product managers and designers, but would be a great read for financial managers and marketing managers. A manufacturing manager reading this book will smile with satisfaction at seeing common modern manufacturing principles well applied to the design realm.
The only weak points I can think of are: 1) That it may be useful for the author to break out case studies rather than keeping them in the same typeface intermingled with the rest of the text. 2) No real advice is given on how to overcome real-world resistance to these ideas. Some sage advice on how to introduce these concepts and tools into organizations with existing biases and cultures could be a real benefit to practitioners. These are minor objections though.

Old and well written fluidized bed classic, still relevant today

**Intro**
This book was written in 1991, but it is still in print. This is probably because a book of comparable quality covering the fluidized bed topic to the extent that this one does has just simply not emerged since then. If you want to learn about fluidized beds for practically any purpose, this book is an excellent start, and also an excellent ongoing reference manual. This book is also remarkable since it was written in part by Octave Levenspiel, who is famous for writing a couple of more or less entry level books to chemical reactor design, The Chemical Reactor Omnibook, and Chemical Reaction Engineering. The Omnibook is particularly friendly and amazing (handwritten!!), and depicts Levenspiel to be a really intelligent, sensitive, witty, and unique person. Consider Fluidization Engineering to be his more serious/advanced/specific book topic. Fortunately, this one is just as well written, well edited, and accessible.

**The Content**
Amazon's description for the content of this book is pretty brief, but if you use the "Look Inside!" tool, you can read the titles to all of the chapters included in the book. The sub-sections are listed too. You'll also see in the "Look Inside!" that this book has a really nice catalog of variables in the front. The variable catalog is actually very important for this book, There are *a lot* of wacky variables involved with the formulas describing fluidized beds, since the info originally came from a lot of different researchers around the world. Fortunately, the catalog keeps them all straight for you.

The content of the book covers a broad and comprehensive spectrum of aspects of fluidized beds. The first two chapters are fairly non-technical, and discuss generally what fluidized beds are, and their history of use. Chapters 3, and 5-7 describe the gritty details of the fluidization fluid dynamics itself. Chapter 4 is about the gas distributers that all fluidized beds require, and how to design them. Chapter 8 is about high-velocity fluidization, after you push a bubbling fluidized bed up into being a turbulently fluidized bed. Chapter 9 is about particle mixing and segregation. Chapters 10-13 are about heat and mass transfer in fluidized beds. Chapter 14 is about what to do when the particles are changing size over time. Chapter 15 is about circulating fluidized beds. Finally Chapters 16-18 are about designing chemical reactors with fluidized beds inside them. Together, this info is wonderfully comprehensive. It seems like everything one could ever want is here, and it is all well discussed, and reasonably accessible to a general engineering audience. The comprehensiveness makes this a long book, but fortunately the chapters function well independently from each other, so you can just pick out the ones that you find relevant, and focus on them without worrying about the others.

**Conclusions/Buying Advice**
There is also a similar, and somewhat older book about fluidized beds somewhat older than this one, Gas Fluidization Technology by Geldart (1986). This is also a very high quality book, but as of the time of writing, it cost around $400, it was out of print. On the other hand, this one is in print, and cost about $73 at the time of this review. If you are looking to get started in fluidized beds, buy this one first, in the interest of saving your money. If you are looking to do some serious heavy lifting with fluidized bed science, like using fluidized beds to get your PhD, running a startup company around a new fluidized bed technology, or doing fundamental research in fluidized beds, consider also getting the Geldart book.

Easy to follow (for the most part)

This book is very well written! Easy to follow (for the most part). I've personally didn't know anything about fluidization and with this book I've been able to build a model to predict my company's process behavior, really, it is that good. Granted, in order to be able to take full advantage of this book you must have a solid math and science background. Otherwise you will probably struggle a bit with it. If you are an engineer trying to learn fluidization this is the book for you.

As the country begins to fall apart and Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba starts flirting with the Soviets, orders come from Washington for "his removal." Within weeks Lumumba is not only out of power but dead. While the rest of the book is full of exciting cloak-and-dagger derring-do and scrapes with death, it is this incident that haunts Devlin. He devotes the last chapter of the book to a point-by-point refutation of his or the agency's involvement in Lumumba's death. A timely, honest, and sexy narrative.

With the U.S. assassination of Osama Bin Laden still fresh in the public's mind, Chief of Station, Congo: Fighting the Cold War in a Hot Zone is an incredibly timely piece of writing. Lawrence Devlin provides a perspective not often represented in many discussions surrounding the Bin Laden assassination. Devlin details his feelings of frustration and concern when given orders to assassinate the leader of the Congo, Lumumba. This honesty may come as a surprise to the reader expecting Devlin to be the typical an-order's-an-order CIA agent. His honesty is equally shocking regarding his defense of his decision to back the dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in two separate coups.

While Devlin attempts to examine his past decisions with a cold eye, there is undoubtably a bias in his reporting. As an ex Chief of Station for the CIA, Devlin is not always examining his own actions, as well as the actions of the United States, from a global perspective. Though often insightful, the novel lacks a complete account of events in the Congo. All in all, certain details in the book lack international understanding. However, Devlin's perspective serves as a unique commentary on cold war politics, and on the early years of the CIA.

Of course, what would a book about the CIA be without some sexy tales of espionage? Devlin presents even some of the most mundane details of working in the Congo through the lens of a fresh faced agent, making each experience a wild and unexpected plot twist. Devlin is careful to toe the line of confidentiality, revealing intimate details about the Eisenhower administration, but maintaining secrecy regarding other agents and issues that may still carry weight in the global political sphere.

This well written, fast paced book is a must read for cold war enthusiasts, whether buff or beginner. The anti-communist mindset permeates almost every detail of the book, and is highlighted by Devlin's commentary nearly 50 years after the end of Cold War. The book addresses controversial questions surrounding international interference, government sponsored assassinations, and U.S. foreign policy in a Hollywood caliber action narrative.

Not to mention the kindle edition is environmentally friendly and affordable!

Fighting a hot war in the Cold War.

Larry Devlin shows how a resourceful CIA agent can cause a difference in the Cold War. He reluctantly received the chief of station of the Congo Republic in 1960. He was advised he needed two proper suits and his golf clubs, he went into Brazzaville expecting no problems. Upon discovering the hoarde of whites fleeing across the Congo River, he prepared himself for the worst.
I really enjoyed this story. The former Belgian Congo is such a large country, and the rivalries were so complex, it is difficult to understand. Devlin reveals all the rivals for power, and his assessment of them. Even though I doubt Mobutu was all that good, maybe the rest of the lot was worse than him. His book makes sense of the warring factions competing in Zaire. Other books did not always give that view. Lumumba was viewed in a very negative light.
This is a great book for those trying to understand what a CIA agent does in a foreign country. It also shows an activist agent determining policy, since Washington was unable to lead the way. A very interesting read.

Good read, by someone who has been there!!

This is a good read for someone who wants to know how things were like in the Congo during the Cold War. So many Congo books are written by Academics who have no real world knowledge but merely wish to assign blame for the problems faced there. Instead, I challenge you to read this book to see how things were on the streets. It never ceases to amaze how many folks in University-land write books about places they have never been, and with a pre-conceived notion that everything bad that happens everywhere is because of the 'evil Western man'. Reality check in this book - many of the issues in the Congo were because it was the Congo. No need for more Western apologists.

As someone living in Africa now (but not during the Cold War) I can tell you this book is refreshing!

Christmas porn

It really pains me to say this; but, Santa Baby is short on story line and character development. Jennifer Crusie's novella, "Hot Toy" saved this volume from a one star rating; however, even this piece was not quite up to Crusie's usual rollicking good fun standards. If it were stand alone piece, I would probably have given the novella 3 stars.

Lori Foster and Carly Phillips really disappointed me though and dragged the book down irretrievably. Foster's "Christmas Bonus" lacked everything but sex, of which it had way too much. And Phillips' "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" was so unbelievable that even the sex fell flat.

All in all, I was thoroughly disappointed and saddened that Crusie's name is linked to this book. All three authors are much better writers than what was delivered by this book. Save your money and read some of their other works such as, Faking It by Jennifer Crusie.

I really wanted to love this book, but the truth is, it's just OK.

Jennifer Crusie writes an action/spy novella In Hot Toy. Trudy is sent out on Christmas Eve to purchase the latest Hot Toy for her nephew. Of course the toy isn't in stock as everyone wants one. While going through other shelves hoping for a misplaced toy, she runs into a guy she dated 3 times. She thought he was the one. He never called back. The two get mixed up in spy game when they toy she finds contain secret Chinese codes. I thought her's was the best as it was entertaining and the couple's relationship was beleivable. Plus there are quite a few laughs thrown in. If it was just Jennifer Crusie's story I had to rate I would probably give it a 4.

In Lori Fosters Christmas Bonus you have Maggie who has recently taken over her fathers company upon his death. Eric is the employee everyone thought would take over the company. Eric and Maggie both have loved eachother secretly since they met. Eric stumbles upon some evidence of Maggies feelings and decides to act on it. I thought the plot was good, but the story just didn't live up to all it could have been.

In Carly Phillips Naughty Under the Mistletoe you have Toni, a woman who decides she is going to make the moves on her soon to be ex-boss at the Christmas Party. She ends up kissing his twin instead. I am a Carly Phillips fan and this story just fell flat. The couple fall in love after a one night stand. I just couldn't buy it.

These are 3 quick easy reads. Each has entertaining value, but it might be a book you want to check out at the library or borrow from a friend instead of buy.

Enjoyable seasonal anthology....

SANTA, BABY contains one phenomenal new novella by Jennifer Crusie and two reprints from Lori Foster and Carly Phillips. See what happens when Christmas means romance is in the air....

A Major MacGuffin is the "Hot Toy" this Christmas in Jennifer Crusie's phenomenal new novella. Trudy Maxwell is determined to find a Major MacGuffin for her nephew, Leroy, this Christmas Eve after her dad forgets to buy him one. After all, Evil Nemesis Brandon has one, toxic waste packets and all. Trudy is determined that Leroy won't suffer the same heartbreak she and her sister suffered every year when Santa's gifts "fell off the sleigh". Unfortunately, Trudy soon finds herself embroiled in the midst of international espionage and she'll have to decide whether to trust Nolan Mitchell who stole her heart and dumped her several months earlier.

Jennifer Crusie is the master at writing a humorous romance! "Hot Toy" will have the reader laughing out loud nonstop as the antics of the characters are hysterical. The interplay between Trudy and Nolan is funny, but Trudy's conversations with her sister, Courtney, steal the show. The visual images described by Ms. Crusie are so uproariously vivid that one can easily see the carnage of the gingerbread men and the gumdrops sliding off of the roof of the gingerbread house! This reviewer can't remember when she has laughed so hard. Thank you, Ms. Crusie, for a story that puts humor into the entire "Hot Toy" chaos.

Lori Foster's "Christmas Bonus" is about an office romance. Maggie Carmichael inherited her father's business when all she really wanted was her father's right hand man, Eric Bragg. Unfortunately, Eric has been distant ever since Maggie became his boss. Will love blossom as a "Christmas Bonus" this year for Maggie and Eric?

Lori Foster excels at writing a steamy romance. "Christmas Bonus" is definitely a "feel-good" sort of story that is perfect for the holidays. The sexual attraction between Maggie and Eric is never in doubt. Most of the development of their relationship was believable but this reviewer was a bit irritated by comments made by Eric later in the book as it tainted the entire romance. If one eliminates those statements by Eric, then "Christmas Bonus" is an enjoyable holiday tale.

Carly Phillips puts a new twist on an old theme in "Naughty Under the Mistletoe". Toni Larson intends to seduce Stephan Corbin but finds herself with his twin, Maxwell. Will their one night of being "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" bloom into so much more or will their own insecurities get in the way?

Carly Phillips manages to pack a lot of emotional depth into such a short story. Both Toni and Maxwell have their own set of insecurities but each opens up to the other over an unusual game of pool. The blossoming of their romance after such a short period of time is surprisingly believable.

SANTA, BABY stands out as a superb anthology based on the strength of the Jennifer Crusie novella. For "Hot Toy" alone, this reviewer strongly recommends this anthology as I laughed until I cried over this story. Lori Foster and Carly Phillips offer two decent seasonal stories but fans of both should be cautioned that these are both reprints. SANTA, BABY proves to be an enjoyable seasonal anthology that should please fans of Ms. Crusie in particular.
