Saul Leiter: Early ColorFrom Steidl

This is a reprint of the immensely successful Early Color (2008), which presented Saul Leiter's remarkable body of color work to the public for the first time in book form. Although Edward Steichen had exhibited some of Leiter's color photography at The Museum of Modern Art in 1953, it remained virtually unknown to the world thereafter. Leiter moved to New York in 1946 to become a painter, but through his friendship with Richard Pousette-Dart he quickly recognized the creative potential of photography. Leiter continued to paint, exhibiting with Philip Guston and Willem de Kooning, but the camera remained his ever-present means of recording life in the metropolis. None of Leiter's contemporaries, with the partial exception of Helen Levitt, assembled a comparable body of work: subtle, often abstract compositions of lyrical, eloquent color.

Review
Leiter's color photography offers its own version of chance: an attunement to the visual masterpieces that can be found in almost every urban instant. (Michael Greenberg The New York Review of Books)

From the Publisher
From PDN, The Legends Issue, 2007
Leiter's place is now assured. He will forever be known as one of the first photographers to use color in a serious, artistic way. Meticulously printed, his pictures use muted colors...that help tamp down the volume and motion of frenetic city streets. His prism tempers the more anxious, acerbic portrayal of city life offered by his peers Robert Frank and William Klein...Leiter's photographs are as likely to be compared to abstract expressionist painters like Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman or Richard Pousett-Dart.

About the Author
Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh in 1923, the son of a rabbi. His work is in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Baltimore Museum of Art; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and other public and private collections.

Book desc/product details are INACCURATE (not the 2008 First Edition!)
By c. elisabeth dubois
Don't get me wrong: this little book of photographs --and it is little (8" x 8" square)-- is quite lovely. Personally I would like for it to be larger in format...and yet Saul Leiter's work is in itself quiet and understated, and therefore the book's small size seems to reflect something important about the artist and his aesthetic.

HOWEVER, if you are at all concerned about such things, or a serious collector of photography books, you should know that amazon.com is NOT currently selling 2008/First Editions (as described in both the "Book Description" and "" areas above). The 2008 First Edition of this Steidl book sold out long ago, and what is currently shipping is the 2013/Fourth Printing edition of the book. I tried to bring this to the attention of Amazon.com staff via their customer service channels, but they seem incapable of understanding the crucial difference between a "First Edition" and a "Fourth Printing," and have therefore neglected to change the product information here on the site. Consider yourself warned!

A gem, whether you already know Leiter's work or not
By G. Morgan
Saul Leiter's photography reveals an urban world of rich, yet understated colours and abstract shapes. In some photos, he focuses on a reflective surface or the layer of condensation on a window, causing the objects or people behind them to appear fluid, disjointed or overlaid with a mosaic or other pattern. His black and white work explores juxtapositions, shapes and overlaid surfaces.

I was apprehensive about buying this slim volume of Leiter's work, having recently purchased a copy of another collection of his photos: 'Early Color'. My concern was that there would be too much overlap. I need not have worried. Although about a third of the works in this collection of 64 photos also appear in 'Early Color', the entire book is superb. Moreover, about 25 of the images are of his black and white photos, with which I was entirely unacquainted.

So, what should you do if you are mainly interested in Leiter's colour photography and are hesitating between this and 'Early Color'? If money is no object (and if 'Early Color' is still available, for I do not expect it to remain in print forever), I would recommend choosing 'Early Color'. Although the reproductions in this Photofile book are good, the slightly less bright paper of 'Early Color' better suits Leiter's muted colours. However, if you are budget-conscious or are looking for a selection that includes his monochrome work, this book would be the obvious choice. And if you already own 'Early Color' and are considering another volume of Leiter's wonderful photography, do not hesitate -- this book is a gem.

Size matters
By Robin
I was surprised at how small this book was when it arrived (of course, had I checked the I would have seen that it's about eight inches square) but now having looked through the pages several times I can see why Steidl published it this size. Photographers like Crewdson, Gursky or Shore require a large page because their work is saturated with detail. Here, these wonderful photos are a sliver of city life and presenting them about postcard size is perfect.

Leiter gives us an intimate look at the everyday in what seems to me an almost unique vision. Fred Herzog's color work during the fifties and early sixties in Vancouver does seem slightly similar especially the vibrant reds that appear in both their work (Fred Herzog: Photographs). Leiter's photos though, capture the small fragments of color and shape on the street which he cleverly takes further by using reflection, shadow and soft focus to make an image that could be considered a sort of photo/painting.

I liked the way he uses commercial street signage (as does Herzog) to provide small areas of bright color amongst the dark hues and shadows so prevalent in any city. I doubt any of the photos were taken in bright sunlight and even a few that include snow still have a dark hue to them.

The book has a hundred photos printed with a 175 screen on a matt art, one to page, except for two spreads and opposite each photo there is the briefest of caption: location and date. The first edition came out in 2006, second in 2007 and this one to coincide with an Amsterdam exhibition of Leiter's photos. The publication of this edition should bring the high prices of earlier copies down to a more realistic level. All three editions seem identical except for some type changes on the imprint page.

This is one of those books whose size works in harmony with the contents and really helps to bring Leiter's intimate city photos to life.

Worked for me
By sleeping butterfly
I was interested in getting the original material in one book and this book did that. I applied the program and found it to be successful. I can read books and labels now where before I used reading glasses at 175-200 strength. I haven't been doing the exercises daily now but my eyesight is still good. I believe that relaxing the eye is the key for me. I have trouble with the computer because of a scar on the cornea of my left eye otherwise I would be free of glasses.

So well researched and so well written that it is almost impossible to put down. The novel has everything that readers of racy fiction could ask for: beautiful characters, exotic settings, passion...and situations and characters that are so completely convincing that they come to life.

From Publishers Weekly
Erskine's first novel gets off to a fine start. As a participant in a college research project on hypnotic regression, Jo Clifford is almost too good a subject. Under hypnosis, she relives the final, tortured moments in the life of Matilda, a 12th century Welshwoman. In the process, Jo herself comes close to death. The story then jumps 15 years. Jo, now a journalist researching regression, is again hypnotized and again regresses to Matilda's excitement-packed life. Unfortunately, the pace of the early pages is not maintained. The problem is not with Jo/Matilda, who are both well-drawn, or even with the whopping coincidences Jo encounters. What slows the narrative is the bevy of minor characters, Jo's acquaintances. They talk to her and about her, they try to help her and they conspire against her, all at the expense of the central plotline. This is still a good read, but it could have been better. Doubleday Book Club and Literary Guild alternate.

From Library Journal
Matilda de Braose was an actual 12th-century Englishwoman who angered and was put to death by King John. Fictional journalist Jo Clifford undergoes hypnosis while researching the story of her previous life as Matilda. As she becomes increasingly obsessed with the story, her male friends assume the roles of Matilda's husband, lover, and the king, manipulated by "mad scientist" Dr. Sam Franklyn, who hypnotizes all of them. Jo's story is initially an annoying intrusion in a historical drama that could easily have stood on its own merits. The modern-day characters are all "types," none of them particularly likeable. However, as Matilda's death nears, this complex first novel turns in to an engrossing gothic that races to an exciting conclusion. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates. Marcia R. Hoffman, M.L.S., Hoechst Celanese Corp., Somerville, N.J.

Review
One of the most intriguing, fascinating books I've read in a long time.

Absorbing and hypnotic, Lady of Hay seethes and sizzles with emotions that often erupt out of control... captivating.

Exceptionally vivid... A spooky, quasi-supernatural thriller.

This wonderful mix of time travel/reincarnation set in real historical settings will capture your imagination.

The story will grab your imagination and take you on a ride of twists and turns filled with intrigue, treachery, and lots of passion.

Barbara Erskine is a wondrous storyteller... one of the richest historical novels I have read this year.

I was completely fascinated by both time periods and leading ladies.

Lady of Hay is brilliantly developed, chock full of drama to keep the reader turning the pages long into the night... [Barbar Erskine] is a masterful storyteller.

Erskine is a master storyteller... Kudos to Sourcebooks for reprinting this very entertaining novel.

A well thought out, detailed story with so many twists and turns it gave the plot a new dimension.

A colossal waste of time
By A Lover of Good Books
I enjoy stories about past lives. I love good historical novels. I have some first hand experience with hypnotic regression. I usually love novels written 20-30 years ago. But not this one. It managed to annoy me on many levels.

One could excuse the repeated violent rape scenes, including one perpetrated by the hero, as being characteristic of the 1980s when this book was written, as that was a time before women had finally figured out that a man who says "I love you" and then perpetrates a violent rape belongs in prison, not in your bed.

One might even excuse as characteristic of the 1980s is the fact that all the protagonists in the story behave like alcoholics, downing what we now would consider volumes of drink that would be diagnosed as binge drinking in just about every scene set in the present.

But one one cannot excuse the ridiculous way in which hypnosis and past life regression are presented in this story and the silly way that everyone including supposed medical professionals encourage what would be in real life a psychotic reaction in the heroine.

The heroine herself is Too Stupid to Live--the classic dumb heroine who, when warned not to go down into the darkened basement while a killer is on the loose and the power is out, always goes into the basement. If you enjoy that kind of story you'll love this one. If you like your heroine to be slightly brighter than a guinea pig, save your 99 cents and download something else.

The worst part of this book is that the writer has enough of a command of style to get you reading this bloated, endlessly long book. So that it isn't until you've gotten more than half way through that you realize just how stupid the plotting is. If you keep reading after that you are rewarded with a completely unbelievable and emotionally unsatisfied ending.

Further complaints: The book claims that the history that lies behind the endlessly dull past-life story is well-researched, but any author who puts bubonic plague into a story set in the last decades of the 1100s has NOT done their research. Even in the days before Google mildly educated people knew that the plague first appeared in Europe in 1348.

If the book had swept me into an emotionally moving story I would have easily overlooked the innaccuracies, but the emotional interaction between the main characters is wooden and we never get into their heads or feel their reactions, both in the story set in the present and the one in the past. Both are static, with no character undergoing a hint of growth anywhere. The characters are the same on at the end (which felt like page 9000 by the time I got there) as they were in Chapter 1. How this book got to be a bestseller in a world that produced Outlander a few years later is beyond me.

Perhaps you had to read it in 1985 to love it, since there do seem to be many readers who did. But reading it in 2012, I certainly didn't. Between the rape scenes and the endless boring interactions between dull English people living what must have been considered a glamorous life in the mid-1980s this book struck me as one that should have remained a fond memory.

A wonderful medieval tale with a not-so-strong modern frame
By SpunStories B.
Barbara Erskine's novel LADY OF HAY, in part an historical novel about Maud (or Matilda) de Braose, who had the misfortune of living during the time of King John the Bad (1199-1216), is one of those novels with parallel plotlines.

In 1970s England, we meet 19-year-old Jo Clifford, who has an amazing ability as a subject in a regression hypnosis, when she relives the last, tortured moments of a 13th-century Norman-French woman, whose husband held a great deal of power in the Welsh Marches during the reign of Henry II (1154-1189), and his sons Richard the Lionheart (1189-1199) and King John.

The modern story then jumps 15 years, and we meet 35-year-old Jo Clifford, successful journalist, and as hard-headed as you expect a modern woman to be. She is given an assignment to investigate regression hypnosis, which is a technique that claims to access a person's memory of a past life. Jo initially pooh-poohs the idea, until she becomes a subject herself.

At that point, the medieval story takes off.

I am not alone in finding the medieval story more compelling, primarily because the stakes are so high, giving Ms. Erskine opportunities for building a spine of tension to hold up the story arc.

The modern part of the story was not interesting. The relationship between Jo Clifford and her on-again, off-again boyfriend Nick went round, and around, and around, and while true to life, this spinning of wheels meant that many opportunities for tension were lost.

Nick's brother Sam is cast as the mad scientist, and as a former scientist myself, I wish that Ms. Erskine had eschewed the cliches and dug deeper to have formed a more interesting character. Sam's motivation is not clear, except that he seems to have gone quite mad for no apparent reason. My question was how did we get from the concerned young man we glimpsed in 1970, to the out-of-control sadist in 1985? No satisfactory answer is given.

The modern story deserves 3 stars, the medieval story deserves 5 stars, so I am giving this novel 4 stars.

Right an unjust death
By Ana'FichesdeLectures

“Lady of Hay” has been recommend to me for quite a while now and I never got a chance to read it. It is a suspenseful novel full of mystery and historical facts about the Welsh culture, specifically the story of Matilda de Braose of the 12th Century, also known as “Moll Walbee” (1). It is intense, long, enriched with details, tedious at times but you really get to enjoy the novel. You never get bored. Her life will mainly revolve around “three men who so ruled her life: William, the king, and Richard de Clare.”(2)

(2) Erskine, Barbara (2010-10-01). Lady of Hay: Two Women, Eight Hundred Years, and the Destiny They Share (p. 447). Sourcebooks. Kindle Edition.

The author used quite a complex medium of narration, I must say, to invite us to the life of Matilda. The main character, Jo submits herself to a series of hypnosis where she is regressed to her previous life. The theme of reincarnation takes full meaning in this novel. Despite my carelessness on these various themes [hypnosis, regression techniques, and reincarnation paraphernalia], I really enjoyed the historical part of this novel. Even if you don’t really care, nor is invested into reincarnation, as me,
the splendid work done by the author on the historical part is outstanding. The novel is therefore multilayered and complex.

I definitely will be reading more novels from this author.

[* Spoilers alert!]

My complaints:
1. I felt the end was rushed.
2. The author never really explained how Sam knew all along who he was in Jo’s past life.
3. I quite did not agree that Nick represented King John. In my opinion, Richard de Clare was a better choice. You will learn that her love affair with this last one was fictitious anyway.

Amazon.com Review

Drawing from a remarkable range of real-life stories, Mnookin offers his thoughtful guidance in disputes of all sorts where the temptation is to demonize:

The CEO of a small high-tech company learns that his joint-venture partner, a big foreign corporation, has been secretly cheating him under a license agreement; IBM discovers that Fujitsu, its largest competitor, has copied its software; the San Francisco Symphony is torn apart by poisoned labor-management relations; divorcing spouses, each feeling wounded and betrayed, disagree about custody and support; three siblings are in conflict about what to do with a jointly inherited vacation property.

Mnookin also examines decisions made in conflicts with evil regimes, where lives and liberty were at stake. He analyzes Winston Churchill's fateful choice in May 1940--Britain's darkest hour--to reject negotiations with Adolf Hitler and to carry on the fight. He compares Nelson Mandela's decision to initiate negotiations with the South Africa apartheid government that had imprisoned him for life with the imprisoned Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky's decision not to negotiate with the KGB for his freedom. And Mnookin evaluates with sensitivity the Hungarian Jew Rudolf Kasztner's still controversial decision to negotiate with Adolf Eichmann in the hope of saving lives.

This lively, informative, indispensable book identifies the tools one needs to make wise decisions about life's most challenging conflicts.

From Publishers Weekly
Mnookin, head of Harvard's Program on Negotiation, combines business, history, philosophy and psychology to present a complete set of tools for confronting "Devils," defined as any individual perceived as a harmful adversary. Examining eight conflicts, including Winston Churchill's decision to reject negotiations with Adolf Hitler, Nelson Mandela's decision to initiate discussions with South Africa's apartheid government, IBM's discovery that its largest competitor copied its software, poisoned labor-management issues in the San Francisco Symphony, and examples from his professional experience, Mnookin (Beyond Winning) provides a straightforward account of the deliberative options when facing a "Faustian tension between pragmatism and principle." Along with cogent analysis, Mnookin suggests four general guidelines for determining the best course of action: systematically compare the cost-benefit ratios of negotiating or fighting, collect advice from others, tip the scales in favor of negotiation before fully committing, and don't allow moral intuition to override pragmatic assessment. While Mnookin admits his suggestions are "hardly the last word," they will help decision-makers focus their thoughts in challenging situations. END

Good facts, few negotiation principles
By Ryan Vlasak
Mnookin begins Bargaining with the Devil with the important and timely question of whether you should negotiate with parties you view as evil and uncompromising, and ends with the simple and commonsensical answer: "Not always, but more often than you feel like it."

For examples of negotiating with "evil," Mnookin divides the book into "global devils," "business devils," and "family devils." In the section on global devils, Mnookin explains why he thinks Rudolf Kasztner was right to negotiate with Adolf Eichmann, why Winston Churchill was right not to negotiate with Hitler, and why Nelson Mandela was right to negotiate with the apartheid regime in South Africa. In the other two sections, Mnookin draws on his experience as a mediator and relates more difficult but successful mediations involving IBM v. Fujitsu, the San Francisco symphony, and family law disputes.

While Mnookin's political examples are well-researched and interesting in revealing the details of the decision-making process of the various actors, and while his examples of difficult business and domestic mediations exhibit him as an adept and successful mediator, conspicuously lacking from the book are developed or detailed theories or principles of negotiation that weave the examples together. As a result, the book seems forced and fails to come together as a whole.

Praiseworthy for its ambitious topic and call for conflict resolution, Bargaining with the Devil remains worth reading. But the book's lesson also remains simple: Don't demonize your opponent or overly-moralize your own position or you may end up worse off.

If you're looking for a detailed book on theories and strategies of negotiation, you should look elsewhere, like to Mnookin's own Beyond Winning or Fisher's Getting to Yes.

WWSD: What would Spock do?
By anonymous
Have you ever fought with someone you thought was evil? Ever felt betrayed by a friend, a family member, a business partner? In these situations, emotions are fundamentally intertwined with any decision to negotiate; in fact, the very act of negotiation may attack one's identity. Moral righteousness is a powerful thing, and notions of right and wrong/good and evil can drive people to forgo negotiation even when it would be in their best interests. This is the struggle that is explored through the seven real-world scenarios in the book. Mnookin analyzes the difficult decisions in each chapter, delving into the possible alternatives to negotiation, providing creative solutions, and assessing the decisions made by the parties. The scenarios range from the harrowing ordeal of negotiating with Nazis to save Jewish lives, to the bitterness of a divorce settlement - all with the common thread of scrutinizing the seemingly impossible task of knowing when to engage and when to refuse (my favorite chapter in particular is the one that focuses on Nelson Mandela's decision to negotiate with the National Party). The book reads like a novel - each story is unique, gripping, and monumental in its own way, yet Mnookin's writing makes them easily accessible to the reader. I found myself completely immersed into each situation (for example, I still cannot decide whether I would have ever negotiated with the KGB). It also provides a critical lens to analyze how to deal with other "evil" actors, such as terrorist regimes, etc.

Decisions to negotiate are everywhere. The book does more than just describe other people's negotiation decisions - Mnookin provides a great framework to approach negotiation in general, taking you through each step and cautioning the reader against falling into common traps such as demonization and moralism. He introduces the fantastic "Spock" character to help conceptualize the "rational" decisionmaker, and yet he does not advocate that this type of analysis is always best; Mnookin fully understands the nuances of human emotion and identity, as is evident in his storytelling and perceptive analysis. He never pretends that any negotiation is ever easy. In sum, the book is a fantastic read. I would recommend it to anyone.

great read for a flight
By anonymous
This book is a lot of fun! It's quite ambitious, trying to be a number of things at the same time, and I think it largely succeeded.
I expected a combination of philosophical treatise, a la Book of Job or Faustus, and negotiation handbook. Mnookin didn't disappoint on either front, although that's not ultimately what the book's about. It does raise, and sometimes answer, fascinating questions of moral and political philosophy, exploring whether negotiation ever degenerates into "pandering to evil" and the conflicting obligations of a leader to his constituents and his conscience (think Profiles in Courage). And while not a how-to negotiation guide, it provides a fascinating window into the work of a master negotiator, chronicling some of the author's most impressive interventions.
Bargaining with the Devil also has a bit of a self-help flavor to it, laying out the many intellectual and psychological traps that thwart many of our efforts to negotiate thorny situations at work and in our private lives.
Above all though, its a book of stories, some historical and some intensely private. Because most of the chapters are self-contained tales of individuals who faced agonizing decisions of whether or not to negotiate with perceived devils, it's easy to pick this book up for an hour or so on a flight, by the pool or before bed -- and very hard to put it down!

The Sovereign Individual: Mastering the Transition to the Information Age, by James Dale Davidson, William Rees-Mogg

Two renowned investment advisors and authors of the bestseller The Great Reckoning bring to light both currents of disaster and the potential for prosperity and renewal in the face of radical changes in human history as we move into the next century. The Sovereign Individual details strategies necessary for adapting financially to the next phase of Western civilization.
Few observers of the late twentieth century have their fingers so presciently on the pulse of the global political and economic realignment ushering in the new millennium as do James Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees-Mogg. Their bold prediction of disaster on Wall Street in Blood in the Streets was borne out by Black Tuesday. In their ensuing bestsellar, The Great Reckoning, published just weeks before the coup attempt against Gorbachev, they analyzed the pending collapse of the Soviet Union and foretold the civil war in Yugoslavia and other events that have proved to be among the most searing developments of the past few years.
In The Sovereign Individual, Davidson and Rees-Mogg explore the greatest economic and political transition in centuries -- the shift from an industrial to an information-based society. This transition, which they have termed "the fourth stage of human society," will liberate individuals as never before, irrevocably altering the power of government. This outstanding book will replace false hopes and fictions with new understanding and clarified values.

From Publishers Weekly
The computer revolution, in the authors' dire scenario, will subvert and destroy the nation-state as globalized cybercommerce, lubricated by cybercurrency, drastically limits governments' powers to tax. They further predict that the next millennium will see an enormous decline in the influence of politicians, lobbyists, labor unions and regulated professions as new information technologies democratize talent and innovation and decentralize the workplace. In their forecast, citizenship will become obsolete; new forms of sovereignty reminiscent of medieval merchant republics will spring up; electronic plebiscites will decide legislative proposals; mafias, renegade covert agencies and criminal gangs will exercise much more behind-the-scenes power. Davidson and Rees-Mogg, who publish Strategic Investment, a financial newsletter, present an apocalyptic exercise that is unconvincing. Appendices offer advice to "Sovereign Individuals" (members of the information elite) on how to invest, find tax shelters, avoid criminals and list one's business on the World Wide Web.

From Library Journal
Following up their equally visionary Blood in the Streets (LJ 5/1/87) and The Great Reckoning (S. & S., 1993), the authors offer a sweeping analysis of the implications, especially financial, of the information age. According to Jupiter Communications, a research firm specializing in emerging technologies, in the year 2000 online transactions will total about $7.3 billion, and new payment methods such as electronic money will be used for almost half of that amount. The authors explain that such developments are driving a "megapolitical" level of societal transformation similar in scope and significance to the end of the Roman Empire or the 15th-century gunpowder revolution. The key result of this information revolution will be the advent of the "sovereign individual" and the death of mass democracy and the welfare state. The authors are serious, conservative thinkers whose advice will attract attention on Wall Street. A major work; strongly recommended for academic libraries.?Dale F. Farris, Groves, Tex.

From Booklist
Davidson and Rees-Mogg still hold out for the apocalypse. They've been sounding the alarm for more than a decade, first with Blood in the Streets: Investment Profits in a World Gone Mad (1987) and then in The Great Reckoning: How the World Will Change in the Depression of the 1990's (1991). What sets their books apart from those of other doomsayers is that a number of their specific forecasts have been accurate; it is their overwrought analysis than has gone astray. This time around they see citizenship becoming obsolete and national governments irrelevant. Violence will become more widespread and organized. In cyberspace, individual differences will no longer matter but know-how will mean everything. There will be a total transition to "the cybereconomy." The authors' warning: take cover while you can and take your money with you! David Rouse

A thought provoking and engaging book
By Agam Bellum
I read this book knowing nothing about its authors; after reading it I have subscribed to James Dale Davidson's financial newsletter! In a world that appears to have gone mad with fear and self-doubt, Davidson and Rees-Mogg provide a grand theory that explains why the world is the way it is in general. What they call "megapolitics" helps to explain how technological innovation drives not only the economy but also international relations. This book challenged my understanding of the internet by showing how advanced telecommunications changes the fundamental relation between the individual and the state. Even if you do not agree with Davidson and Rees-Mogg's theory, the bibliography of this book is so well researched that it alone justifies the purchase. I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased a copy for my family to read. A "must read" hardly does this book justice.

Cyberpunk future
By Robert H. Stine Jr.
This is a very interesting book with disturbing implications: the authors contend that, in our lifetimes we will see the messy demise of nation states, with the most advanced of the Western democracies falling the farthest and hardest. The grim future they depict is essentially that of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or Gibson's "Neuromancer".

In making their case, the authors draw an interesting and convincing parallel between today's concepts of patriotism and national duty, and the Church in late medieval Europe.

I'd fault the book for its hyped up rhetoric and excessive repetition of the same historical factoids. Also, the dire predictions of this 1997 book are somewhat undermined by the predictions of the scope of the Y2K computer failures, and also by the odd depiction of Peruvian ex-dictator Fujimori as the wave of the future.

a review of "the sovereign individual"
By Alonzo Cobb
I've read all of the books by Davidson and Rees-Mogg, and was pleasantly surprised by their latest effort. The thing that's particularly inspiring about this book is the opportunity to consider futures that are not promoted by typical pundits and "experts." It's refreshing to be able to not only have an alternate view, but also to be able to review the research that has gone into the analysis, which enables one to see how the model being presented was developed. Even if reality does not show up exactly as presented, it's certainly thought-provoking.

Inorganic Spectroscopic Methods (Oxford Chemistry Primers), by Alan K. Brisdon

An understanding of spectroscopic methods is a pre-requisite for students in chemistry and related disciplines from the undergraduate level onwards. Inorganic Spectroscopic Methods provides a firm introduction to common spectroscopic techniques and interpretation of spectra, and their application to inorganic-based systems. The approach taken is unashamedly aimed at the application of the techniques and interpretation of the spectra obtained. Worked examples, illustrative diagrams and references for a theoretical approach are provided throughout the book. Beginning with a introductory description of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with matter, each subsequent chapter covers the physical basis of related spectroscopic methods (vibrational, resonance, UV-visible spectroscopy, mass spectrometry) and their applications typical in inorganic compounds. Each chapter ends with a number of set problems and short questions in the margin are given throughout the chapters to test the basic concepts. The final chapter offers an integrated approach to the identification of unknown materials - putting together the techniques discussed. This essential text for all undergraduate chemists will also benefit postgraduates in chemistry, and undergraduate and postgraduate students of biochemistry and the biomedical sciences.
