The Bridge Ladies: A Memoir, by Betsy Lerner

A fifty-year-old Bridge game provides an unexpected way to cross the generational divide between a daughter and her mother. Betsy Lerner takes us on a powerfully personal literary journey, where we learn a little about Bridge and a lot about life.

After a lifetime defining herself in contrast to her mother’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” generation, Lerner finds herself back in her childhood home, not five miles from the mother she spent decades avoiding. When Roz needs help after surgery, it falls to Betsy to take care of her. She expected a week of tense civility; what she got instead were the Bridge Ladies. Impressed by their loyalty, she saw something her generation lacked. Facebook was great, but it wouldn’t deliver a pot roast.

Tentatively at first, Betsy becomes a regular at her mother’s Monday Bridge club. Through her friendships with the ladies, she is finally able to face years of misunderstandings and family tragedy, the Bridge table becoming the common ground she and Roz never had.

By turns darkly funny and deeply moving, The Bridge Ladies is the unforgettable story of a hard-won—but never-too-late—bond between mother and daughter.

Review
“Lerner’s memoir makes a case for spending time together under the rules of neutrality imposed by a game, and approach to living that refrains from over-sharing and outward complaining to concentrate on the task at hand. The bridge ladies are there for one another, even as they keep their feelings to themselves and play on.” (New York Times Book Review)

“A heartfelt and affecting memoir.” (Washington Post)

“A smart and colorful memoir.” (Maureen Corrigan, NPR's Fresh Air)

“A deeply affecting memoir...a generous and honest examination, she honors these women’s lives” (Boston Globe)

“In her absorbing memoir, Lerner probes marriage, career, motherhood, depression, aging, death, religion and sex, discovering that, although the Bridge Ladies’ generation differs from hers, they share common values of love and kinship. This beautifully written, bittersweet story of ladies of a certain age and era will have wide appeal.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“A book for two generations.” (Dallas Morning News)

“The Bridge Ladies is an uplifting account of a baby boomer’s attempt to understand her mother’s generation. Lerner never lets herself off the hook, either, and the result is candid, fresh and enlightening.” (Providence Journal)

“Through the alchemy of a grand game, Betsy Lerner has woven a universal coming-of-age story for both mother and daughter. A poignant, humorous and often painful struggle through the pageantry of playing cards; a woman’s face on every one.” (Patti Smith, author of Just Kids and M Train)

“Betsy Lerner’s ladies are our ladies, our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. Lerner takes us back to their tables, capturing a group of wonderful American women—growing older now and braving new battles—with sweetness, humor and sharp perceptiveness. This is a book with heart and feeling.” (George Hodgman, author of Bettyville)

“Lerner takes us on a journey of understanding: the card game, the women who play it, their lives and relationships. In Lerner’s beautifully observed account, Bridge becomes both a literal and figurative pathway to repairing an even more precious bond: her own relationship to her mother.” (Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don’t Understand and You're Wearing THAT?)

“This is the best book about mothers and daughters I’ve read in decades, maybe ever. It’s about mother-daughter conflict, the desire to love and be loved, aging and loss, discovery and renewal. Betsy Lerner is a beautiful, achingly honest writer, and The Bridge Ladies is at once heartbreaking and hilarious.” (Amy Chua, Yale Law Professor and author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother and The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America)

“A searching, funny, warm memoir.” (O, the Oprah Magazine)

“The Bridge Ladies reminded me of Tuesdays with Morrie, except it takes place on Mondays and has five Morries. Exquisitely written, in this book are portraits of five women whose like we won’t see again. I devoured it in one greedy sitting, and started re-reading as soon as I finished.” (Will Schwalbe, author of the New York Times bestseller The End of Your Life Book Club)

From the Back Cover

A Bridge club provides an unexpected connection across a generational divide between mother and daughter. Betsy Lerner tells a funny, intimate, and deeply affecting story that’s a little about Bridge and a lot about life.

After a lifetime of defining herself against her mother’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell generation, Lerner found herself back home in the suburban town that represented everything she wanted to flee: namely the traditional life her mother stood for. Yet, when Roz needed help after surgery, Betsy stepped in. She expected a week of tense civility; what she got were the Bridge Ladies. Impressed by their faithful visits, she saw something her own generation lacked: Facebook was great, but it wouldn’t deliver a pot roast.

Tentatively at first, Betsy became a regular at her mother’s Monday Bridge club, falling under the spell of the intimidating game. Unexpectedly, the Bridge Ladies became a catalyst for change as Betsy and Roz reconciled years of painful misunderstandings and harrowing silences. The Bridge table became the common ground they never had.

Darkly funny and deeply moving, The Bridge Ladies is the unforgettable story of a hard-won—but never-too-late—bond between mother and daughter.

Playing the hand you're dealt
By E.M. Bristol
When Betsy Lerner (author of "Forest for the Trees," and "Food and Loathing") was a little girl, the "Bridge Ladies," a group of suburban Jewish women in Connecticut who played the game regularly at her mother's house were a source of glamour, though as a teen, she later dismissed them as square and disconnected from the growing feminist movement. Years later with a husband and daughter of her own, Betsy moved back to her parents' area, first in order to help her father who had a stroke. Later, in the winter of 2013, she came to the aid of her mother, who was recovering from surgery, and discovered that the Bridge ladies, were still a fixture, bringing food and meeting for games about fifty years later. To her surprise, after asking to sit in on a game, Betsy developed an interest in the game and began to take lessons. She also became interested in the five women's lives and began to interview them as well, a process which would wind up lasting almost three years (and culminate with this memoir). Her journey would take her to places like the Manhattan Bridge Club (where she found the teachers varied greatly in their effectiveness and humility), into therapy to help her understand the friction in her relationship with her own mother, and into five remarkable octogenarians': Rhoda, Bette, Bea, Jackie and Roz's lives.

At first, Betsy, a literary agent without a knack for numbers found mastering bridge tricky but was aided when a teacher recommended that she think of playing Bridge as telling a story. Eventually, she began to fill in on occasion at the Bridge table for her mother's group. She also began discovering that her ideas of who the Bridge ladies were weren't quite accurate to say the least. But though they didn't share (or overshare) the way later generations do, they still revealed fascinating things about their lives. From them, Betsy learned about how that generation handled issues like infertility, adoption and even the death of a young child. She also learned about their interests, educational experiences and romantic relationships both then and now. In doing so, Betsy came to better understand herself, her mother in a way that she hadn't been able to previously, and the game of Bridge, which turned out to be less dry than it had seemed to her as a teen. "Bridge," she writes, "is the mother of all metaphors."

It's been said that well-behaved women seldom make history, but they are capable of making absorbing, even moving reading with the right author. And Betsy would agree. "They haven't fought any wars or even picketed any causes. For the most part, they upheld the conventions they were raised with. Mostly, they've hung in." But, she concludes, "I never thought I would say this, but I think the Bridge Ladies are brave." It's more than likely that the reader will share her view.

A poignant look at aging, across the generation gap
By S. McGee
Betsy Lerner's relationship with her mother was always fraught, from the time when, as a pot-smoking rebellious teenager, she balked at her mother's goals for her: marriage to a nice Jewish man, followed by children. Decades later, married and with a daughter, Lerner is living close to her widowed octogenarian mother in New Haven, and is married with a daughter, but their relationship is still strained: her mother still rolls her eyes at everything from Lerner's clothing choices to the fact that a rug in her household is fraying at its edges. Could joining in at the fringes of her mother's 50-year-old bridge game -- a circle of Jewish matrons whom Lerner has watched mature and grow old, and whose children she grew up alongside in Connecticut -- give her insight into her mother and her own generation? And is there a wider lesson here for Lerner's readers?

The answer to the first is yes, perhaps -- or at least, there is a measure of peace to be found for the restless Lerner who seems to struggle constantly with the idea that these women, who came of age in the 1940s and 1950s, might have priorities so very different from her own. Why didn't they yearn for more? More from a marriage? More of a personal life? More open exchanges with their friends in their weekly bridge games? These are questions she keeps returning to in her conversations with each of these women, individually and collectively, and in her own ruminations. The women, for their part, deal with her graciously; Lerner sometimes sounds like the irritating adolescent still struggling to define herself against her elders.

Lerner also sets out to study the game of Bridge itself -- to immerse herself in its rules and strategy, with decidedly uneven results. The contrast between her frustration as she tries, in a half-hearted and frustrated manner, to acquire Bridge skills, and the smooth prowess with which her mother's circle have honed their skills over the years, is telling, and reflects an underlying theme of the book, even if it's one I'm not altogether sure that Lerner recognized she was developing.

For me, the real poignancy and appeal of this memoir were to be found in the way Lerner has captured the grace, fortitude, stubbornness and dignity with which a generation of Jewish matrons in a particular corner of the world are choosing to experience their final years. They know, better than we, what it is like, and that what lies ahead will mean further lack of dignity and independence. They have experienced far more than we have, and done it without asking all and sundry for emotional support or mood-altering medications. I don't know that I'd find them easy to live with, but I came away from this book admiring their stoicism, their faith to their principles as they saw them, and their lack of sentimentality. I didn't see it as humorous or funny, as others have noted, but rather as a moving testimonial to how a group of women adjust to moving through the stages of life and dealing with challenges and setbacks, as recounted through the eyes of a not-always-comprehending member of the next generation.

Ultimately, though, it's a memoir -- another memoir about strained and troubled family relationships, and while it's well-written, that part of it doesn't really rise beyond the pack. And the group of five women, for all Lerner's careful efforts to make them distinct personalities, ultimately aren't that different. I remember that Rhoda was the beauty and Bette was the wannabe actress, but beyond that, the specifics of their lives blur slightly. The collective, however, is interesting enough to make this appeal to avid memoir readers. If you're not interested in this particular demographic, or type of memoir (mothers/daughters; the elderly reminiscing) I would steer clear. It doesn't contain the same magical "ingredient X" that some memoirs do that make it rise above the pack.

Lacks
By Gramma B
I was a little disappointed with this. I thought it would be more about the ladies playing bridge and their lives. It started out ok but the author quickly made it all about her and how she related to them and her life. She complains about her mother a lot and feels her mother was always too critical and remote. Betsy doesn't seem to realize how critical she is of her mother and that perhaps her mother may be hurt by that. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you want to read about a boring self absorbed author.

This technical briefing is intended for trading strategists and trading application developers that are considering the use of FPGA (field programmable gate array) acceleration of all or part of their high frequency trading algorithms. This is not a “how to” guide (that would be an entire book), rather, this offers the material we normally present in our commissioned seminars for managers of proprietary trading companies.

Herein we present the fundamentals of FPGAs, what their intrinsic strengths and weakness are, and how they may be used to realize minimum latency in your trading application. We also address those approaches that should be avoided where experience has demonstrated a lack of success. The briefing is focused on how to avoid the more common mistakes made by traders when first considering FPGA acceleration.

The FPGA application development process is explored to provide the knowledge needed to plan a development project, either in-house or contracted-out. Along with this, evolving techniques and trends are discussed as are their suitability for HFT applications.

especially it is bad when even a medical dictionary gives more than one ...
By Marina Ginzberg
Pros:
The author undoubtedly has knowledge in GI Physiology; tries to distinguish between health conditions and pathologies; honestly mentions what is unknown in the field.
Some info is fresh and new and give you to be eager for more knowledge in the GI physiology.
Moreover, rare statement of iatrogenic treatment is mentioned.
Cons:
Many parts bad-phrased: “they”, “it” etc. not strictly defined, so you cannot derive to which part of a sentence or even a paragraph it belongs. Maybe it enough in a frontal lecture supported by live presentation, but in the book such sentences leaves you in ambiguity.
Some expressions also cause confusion: for example on page 226 written “prolonged fasts” , but what it means -6 hours, 24 hours, two days???
My impression the author doesn’t respect her readers: some abbreviations are not defined in the book; especially it is bad when even a medical dictionary gives more than one definition.
A few logical mistakes give cheerless impression, here are a few examples only:
- On page 170 written “substances move from the mouth to the ileocecal valve in a little under 2 hours..” (how that if only in stomach solid meal remains more than 2 hours according to figure 8-6)
- on page 247 written “Ammonia does not have a physiologic function”, but on the same page written that ammonia consumed in intermediary metabolism.
- Figure 10-1 is misleading (because renal vain and iliac vain are absent)
- Location of cystic duct related to pancreatic duct (both before sphincter of Oddi) in figure 10-7 absolutely different in comparison to figure 15-9; which one belong to human’s?

Some pure GI physiology subjects are missing; for example what happened if you drink regular water only (without a meal).

The name of the book is somewhat misleading; the proper name should be” Introduction into Gastrointestinal Physiology”. You cannot derive it from content or Amazon’s preview. Only in the end of the book it is mentioned literally. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have bought it.

Wolfs and Dragons and Bears.......oh my!
By FrostyJac
I'm so conflicted I don't know where to begin.....

As with all of D'Elen's books I laughed and I cried again and again. I loved the grown up Sierra, she's matured into a beautiful woman/wolf and just the woman that a Dragon needs for his mate. I understood Sarns pain and why he did the things he did, but I still want to whoop him upside the head with a mountain size skillet for all the wasted time and pain.

I love that Sarn was willing to sarifice something that is monumentally important to him, however that's where my conflict comes in. I'm hoping that we find out in the next book that there's a nifty epilogue to this story, because there's a Goddess out there that still hasn't put her two cents worth in on this story.

Oh and by the way Miss D'Elen it's published now for all the world to see, I'll be reminding you again in the future that you promised me a Green Dragon ;)

Laughter and Tears
By Lori J Levy
First get a box of tissues and set to the side as you will need them. The third book in the series has such a heart tugging story line that will leave you drained at the end. I was so prepared for the story to end one way and was blown away with the turn it took. Sarn and Sierra are both characters that you will fall in love with. I love how the author brings characters from her other series into this one. This allows the characters to grow in different but heart warming ways. Sierra's love for Sarn and his for her are wonderfully written. The humor that Sierra brings to the relationship was fun to read. Well worth taking the time to curl up in a comfy chair and read.

Just wow.....You got me......Awesome read
By jumooring
OMG……I Loved Sarn and Sierras story. Wow…..What an emotional ride I just took. I teetered a little on the edge at times. Im not even sure how to put it all into words. This book was so different from the first two. It tugged on my heart from the beginning well actually from the last chapter in Dragons Don’t (book 2) Love but it also had you in a fit of laughter. So I had a feeling this was going to be a roller coaster ride of a book. I could feel the torment that they both where going through as if I were on the outside looking in. This was not so how I expected this book to go and I say this in a good way. What an awesome surprise we all got. I so loveeeeeed that there where so many familiar characters from the Fang series (which I Love) in this book and we got to see what some of the fang gang had been up to. Really if you haven’t read this series you need to read it. It really is an awesome series. With a special love that only these dragons can have for their brides. Can I hardly wait for book 4 Tahrs story…Dragons Live Forever the last book in the series Nope….and I need it soon. D awesome job.

A new view of the Napoleonic wars at sea
By JD
This is not a halting imitation of Hornblower or Patrick O'Brian. Far from it. Just as rousing in action and accurate in maritime detail, Bond's latest tells a story of those desperate times from a totally new angle, that of the new young captain of a revenue cutter in a south England town that is a rats' nest of smugglers. Not only does the attractive young Captain Griffin have to hunt down and apprehend smugglers who will stop at nothing to foil him, but he has to battle intimidated villagers, as well. A page-turner, highly recommended.

Action and intrigue in the Napoleonic age
By Eva Ulett
Alaric Bond's story of the maritime revenue service has as much action and more intrigue than most novels set in the more familiar atmosphere of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic age. In 1801 Commander Griffin leaves the Honorable East India Company officer corp for command of a beautiful, swift sailing revenue cutter, the Bee. Any joy in his new command is quashed when Griffin finds a highly organized crime and smuggling syndicate operating in his new home port of Newhaven. The Horsebridge gang is dominating the port town, which may include Customs House officials and local justices, through a combination of intimidation and reward. Will the town of Newhaven, and more particularly an attractive and capable young woman, rally in support of Commander Griffin, or be as complicit in his destruction as they were his predecessor?

Turn a Blind Eye is a thrilling adventure the equal of any by Steve Berry or William Dietrich, with battles by land and sea that are not to be missed. A highly enjoyable and satisfying read.

I loved the book. A twist from Bonds usual Sea tales but I was not disappointed at all. Keep up the good work and keep them coming.

Thelma & Louise Analysis
By Craig C. Schmidt
Sturken's "Thelma & Louise" is an excellent addition to BFI's Modern Classics book series. This analysis of the popular and conroversial film covers several important topics including: the hype and various reactions/criticisms of the film upon its theatrical release, how the film fits into feminist film theory, whether the violence in Thelma & Louise is worse than other films that were NOT criticized for their violence, what genre the film belongs in, Ridley Scott's directorial vision for the film and various motifs, how the characters change and why, what options these women have in a male dominated world, and what the ending signifies. Sturken includes quotes from several articles and interviews.

Review

'This book is indispensible for anyone interested in the problem of children in war. It is a strikingly fresh collection of essays that brings a strong empirical and multidisciplinary approach to an issue dominated by ideology and rhetoric. Drawing on contemporary and historical examples from North America, Northern Ireland, Russia, France, Darfur, Sierra Leone and elsewhere the essays portray the lives of children in complex situations of armed conflict where they emerge as fully human heroes, soldiers, victims, agents, sufferers, patriots and perpetrators. The book is a splendid contribution to the study of children and childhood.'

Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent, by Harvey Silverglate

The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day. Why? The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have exploded in number but also become impossibly broad and vague. In Three Felonies a Day, Harvey A. Silverglate reveals how federal criminal laws have become dangerously disconnected from the English common law tradition and how prosecutors can pin arguable federal crimes on any one of us, for even the most seemingly innocuous behavior. The volume of federal crimes in recent decades has increased well beyond the statute books and into the morass of the Code of Federal Regulations, handing federal prosecutors an additional trove of vague and exceedingly complex and technical prohibitions to stick on their hapless targets. The dangers spelled out in Three Felonies a Day do not apply solely to “white collar criminals,” state and local politicians, and professionals. No social class or profession is safe from this troubling form of social control by the executive branch, and nothing less than the integrity of our constitutional democracy hangs in the balance.

Excellent book, but unfortunately mistitled
By T. D. Welsh
The product description of this book on amazon.com (the US site) starts by claiming that "The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day". So I was keen to find out what crimes these might be, that ordinary people were unconsciously committing in such profusion. Sadly, that is something you cannot learn by reading this book. As far as I can ascertain, there is literally no mention of "three crimes a day" or anything similar on any of its pages, from the foreword by Alan M Dershowitz to the index. The quotes published on the book's jacket are much more accurate: "Now comes veteran defense lawyer and civil libertarian Harvey A. Silverglate... exposing... a pattern of serious abuses and convictions of innocent people in some of the most famous (as well as obscure) federal cases of recent decades"... "...Silverglate has written a work peerless in revelations about the mad expansion of federal statutes whose result is to define, as criminal, practices no rational citizen would have viewed as illegal..."..."...federal prosecutors have conceived of something truly frightening - punishment without crime..."

Although the book is bound to disappoint anyone looking for a lurid expose of how no decent citizen is safe from the US justice system, it is a valuable and well-written critique of some recent trends in that system. In particular, Silverglate calls attention to Congress' habit of drafting and approving vague laws that can be interpreted in a wide variety of ways depending on the beliefs and attitudes of prosecutors, judges, and juries. He also denounces the growing tendency of prosecutors to intimidate defendants by a combination of vague charges and the threat of truly savage sentences, inducing them to plea bargain - being assured of a definite, relatively light sentence instead of a potentially crushing one. In return, the defendants are forced to testify against other, more important defendants, and so on indefinitely. It is well-known that 90% of criminal cases in the USA are already settled by plea bargain rather than by jury trial. The trouble is that there are so many laws, some of whose provisions are so vague and potentially all-encompassing, that prosecutors can threaten defendants by bringing forward lengthy indictments and calling for commensurately draconian sentences. Unsure of the outcome of a trial, the defendant usually agrees to "full cooperation" and thus becomes part of the prosecution team in its case against the next defendant. As an example of how easy it is to fall foul of federal laws, the author explains that Martha Stewart was imprisoned for five months, not for insider trading as commonly thought, but for making false statements to federal authorities and "a host of other obstruction crimes". In fact, she was never guilty of insider trading, as what she did was perfectly legal. Unfortunately for her, she was unsure of her ground, and so chose to lie to investigators. So she was imprisoned for that!

The Stewart case is a good example of another trend that Silverglate deplores: prosecutors who pick a famous individual or organization and devise plans to "take them down" by whatever means available, rather than (as they should) starting with a crime and prosecuting those who committed it. As chapter followed chapter, I began to feel revulsion for the prosecutors - and also many of their victims, who were often prominent business people and politicians. In a typical case, an ambitious attorney general who wishes to boost his own political career (or that of some associate) sets his sights on a well-known politician and decides to bring him down in any way he can. To do so, he takes advantage of deliberately woolly laws enacted by Congress, popular prejudice against the rich and successful, and general paranoia about crime, dishonesty or even terrorism. After methodical planning, some "small fry" are arrested and threatened with a towering wave of criminal charges. Some of them plea bargain, and are then recruited to give evidence against the next layer - typically their bosses. And so it goes, until the prosecutorial inquisition reaches the person at the top - the mayor, CEO, governor, or whoever it might be. (Admittedly, this approach is sometimes justified: it was just thus that the case against President Richard Nixon was built). First I found myself imagining some tropical ocean scene, with sharks, barracuda, killer whales, giant squid and other carnivorous monsters circling viciously, tearing at one another until the water fills with blood. Later, I saw parallels with the Spanish Inquisition - in which informers made a good living out of denouncing harmless victims, who were tortured until they denounced others, who were then tortured... with the state and the informers dividing the rich proceeds.

Starting with an Introduction in which he sets the scene, Silverglate moves on to chapter 1 which deals with the prosecutions of four prominent local politicians: Raul Martinez, mayor of Hialeah in Florida; Kevin White, mayor of Boston; Alabama Governor Don Siegelman; and former Massachusetts House of Representatives Speaker Thomas Finneran. In passing, he mentions that between 2001 and 2007 the Department of Justice (DoJ) opened investigations into seven times more Democratic public officials than Republicans. The odds of this happening by random chance are less than 1 in 10,000. Chapter 2 deals with the delicate issue of regulating the prescription of narcotic drugs by doctors. As part of the federal "war on drugs", the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has acquired a frightening array of legal powers, which have deterred doctors from prescribing adequate pain-killing medication to the dying, sufferers from cancer, and others who need them. Silverglate outlines the case of Dr Hurwitz, who was imprisoned for 57 months because some of his patients had lied to him to obtain more narcotics than they really needed. Among other things, he notes that fewer than half of those suffering frequent pain get enough relief after seeing a doctor - and that as many as 16,500 Americans bleed to death each year because they have been forced to resort to anti-inflammatory drugs instead of narcotics. Chapter 3 turns to the pursuit of companies marketing medical devices and drugs, pointing out the impossibility of getting a jury (and sometimes, even a judge) to understand the impenetrable thicket of regulations imposed by the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). Corporations usually do whatever prosecutors ask of them - including pleading guilty to any and all charges - because the FDA can debar them from doing business, effectively destroying them.

In chapter 4 Silverglate moves into more contentious territory, tenaciously defending the disgraced financial wizard Michael Milken whose income soared to over $500 million a year in 1987. Contrary to popular opinion (shaped by mass media happy to follow the government line), he maintains that Milken did nothing illegal - although his meteoric success and unorthodox methods upset many establishment figures. The lead prosecutor in this case was Rudy Giuliani who - on the back of this and other famous cases - later became mayor of New York. Although Milken agreed to plead guilty to six felony counts and pay $600 million - to protect his brother Lowell, according to Silverglate - University of Chicago Law Dean Daniel Fischel later determined that all of the six counts to which Milken pleaded guilty "described perfectly lawful transactions"! Chapter 4 also details the prosecutions of CSFB employees, Martha Stewart, and Enron employees such as Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling. While admitting that Enron grossly exaggerated its financial health and prospects, Silverglate alleges that the specific charges brought against it did not hold water, and that the information it supposedly kept secret had in fact been openly published. In chapter 5, he shows how the technique of "starting at the bottom" by inducing junior employees to plea bargain was extended to the corporate level - for instance, how the case against Enron was developed by forcing its auditor Arthur Andersen to cop a "corporate plea bargain" that brought it solidly into the prosecuting camp (and wiped it out as a business entity). Remarkably, it turns out that auditing and accountancy firms can easily be brought to heel by the DoJ, as merely being indicted in a criminal case would be enough to put them permanently out of business.

Chapter 6 recounts how the DoJ took on the American Bar Association (ABA) - the biggest lawyers' organization in the USA, with over 400,000 members. As an appetizer, Silverglate describes the unenviable dilemma of attorney Philip Russell, who found that the local church (a legal client of his) owned a laptop on which one of its employees had stored child pornography. Such "contraband" is always illegal to possess, and there is no defence. Yet Russell could not turn the laptop in to police without betraying the confidence he owed to his client, the church - which in any case had done nothing wrong. So Russell destroyed the laptop. Unfortunately for him, the feds were already on the case and successfully prosecuted him for destroying evidence! Chapter 7 finally gets round to tackling the legal predicament of the media, which - especially since 2001 - has risked being accused of espionage or the like if it publishes material embarrassing to the authorities. And chapter 8 is memorably entitled "National Security: Protecting the Nation from Merchants, Artists, Profesors, Students and Lobbyists for Non-Profits?"

In his Conclusion, Silverglate makes some uncontroversial and reasonable suggestions. He begins in ringing tones: "Creativity and inventiveness are honored and valued in many areas of life. Crafting innovative legal theories to ground criminal prosecutions should not be one of them". He insists that the law should be clear and easily understood, and that citizens should always be able to know whether a given act is legal or illegal so that they can be sure of staying on the right side of the law at all times. What Congress may have intended is quite immaterial: the letter of the law should be what counts. For "...all the procedural rights in the world," he notes, "are for nought if the defendant is unable to understand what it is for which he or she stands indicted".

Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent
By Michael A. Fox
Harvey Silverglate does an extraordinary job analyzing the erosion of rights and the risks it carries to liberty in America in his book, Three Felonies a Day, How the Feds Target the Innocent.

This book is a must read for anyone who cares about the preservation of liberty and putting a check on the encroachment of the federal government in the every day lives of citizens.

He shows how the Department of Justice has led a steady march to expand their reach into the lives of ordinary Americans. The result? Panoply of laws giving them the right to prosecute just about anyone for anything at will.

Their broad application of the Deprivation of Honest Services Statutes in White Collar Crime and a host of other legal gymnastics give them a club every bit as powerful as the Soviet Union at the height of its power. In the Soviet Union and other dictatorships the tools of federalization of all crimes and trampling liberties usually reside in what is commonly called "Defamation Statutes."

Mr. Silverglate identifies numerous laws and Department of Justice interpretations and applications that give them authority rivaling the Soviet Union in its heyday. This boils down to a scandalous use of the federal instruments of powers residing in the executive branch at the Department of Justice that go unchecked.

For anyone who cares about liberty I recommend this book. It is makes a powerful contribution to the cause of justice and freedom and ranks as a modern day call to action equal to Thomas Paine's pamphlet, Common Sense published in 1776.

Mr. Siverglate brings current day threats to our liberties into focus just as Mr. Paine brought the need for the American Revolution into focus in 1776. For Mr. Paine liberty and freedom's enemy resided in King George of England; to Mr. Silverglate it can be found in a runaway Department of Justice intent on expanding its power to intrude and reach into the life of every American.

a lucid and powerful indictment of federal criminal law enforcement
By Malick Ghachem
This is a very thoughtful and vigorously argued book about the injustices that arise when prosecutors seek to expand the reach of federal criminal statutes beyond their proper field of application. The author has litigated many of the cases he discusses, and is able to translate the complexities of that experience intelligently and without condescension, but also without all of the unnecessary technical details that lawyers writing for a general audience sometimes get bogged down in. Harvey Silverglate is an institution in his own right: a tireless advocate for civil liberties, prolific writer, and astute student of the law, there are few people who have a stronger commitment to illuminating the practical workings of the criminal justice system and their relationship to broader currents in the law. This is a must-read for those interested in criminal law, civil liberties, and the recent history of the Department of Justice, by a writer who has the courage of his convictions and voices them powerfully and well.
